Does a flying squirrel actually fly?

In case you were wondering i asked this because i have never seen one and wondered if its name portrayed it.Does a flying squirrel actually fly?
You're other answerer are correct. The flying squirrel actually does glide. There is a flap of skin that connects the ankle of the front limb to the ankle of the back limb to create a 'gliding apparatus';. There is also a lizard with a similar situation. It also glides, but the flap of skin is held out by one of this ribs! Very interesting little creature! There is also a snake with a feature like the lizards and I can't remember what either of them are called. I watch a lot of ';Animal Planet';.Does a flying squirrel actually fly?
not really flying they glide.
they don't fly they glide!!!
They climb high and then jump to another tree, gliding like they have a stunt parachute. The skin between their front and back legs is held out and acts like a little sail for them.
No they are gliders. They are incapable of 'true' flight.
Nope, like the others say, it glides by spreading there arms wide and letting a flap of skin carry them.

Its not really flying, more like falling with style. :]
They glide. I want best answer so I will tell you about them. They are extremly cute. The have flaps of fur on they're sides, like wings only to glide. They are soft. They can climbs trees as most squirrels can.
no they glide through the air. It is more like hang gliding.
