I need to know the difference between a sugar glider and a squirrel,

The Southern Flying Squirrel:

Nails: Tiny and sharp if not trimmed

Nose: Semi-pointy, generally pink, long Whiskers on both Sides

About 4 inches in length, lays flat and acts as a rudder when gliding

Squeaking: High pitch barely audible squeak heard from babies looking for a mom. A lower more audible bark squeak is used when adults are upset.

Flying squirrels give birth to live young. Young are born without fur or any capabilities of its own. Their ears open at 2 to 6 days old, and fur grows in by 7 days. Their eyes don't open until they are 24-30 days old.

Sugar Glider:

Toes: Finger-like, with opposable thumb

Nails: Larger than a Flying Squirrel, very sharp, must be kept trimmed

About 6 inches in length, all fur sticks up

Crabbing: Described as a sharpener or a swarm of bees.

Barking: A small puppy

Hissing: High pitch hissing

Pocket size: 10-12 inches long including the tail

Weighs between 5 and 9 ounces

Fruits, Saps, Honey, Yogurt, Chicken/Eggs/Mealworms

Needs a calcium supplement.

Gliders are marsupials. After about 16 days in the mother, the baby is born, with a weight of only 0.2 grams. It must then find its way to the mother's pouch where it will finish its development attached to one of four nipples for about 70 days. Joeys are weaned 110 to 120 days after emerging from the pouch, which is about 16 to 17 weeks.

The following is true of both the sugar glider and the flying squirrel:

Bonds well with immediate family, requires hours of attention every day, enjoys being with their humans. Playful, curious, loves to play with fun toys in their cage. Even though they are nocturnal they will enjoy playtime during the day, Will try to get your attention if you are in the room, to get them out and play . Generally accepting of strangers if properly socialized.

Before making a decision, you need to research to find out if owning a flying squirrel is even legal in your state. Sugar gliders vary in price but I've found them to be between $200-400.

For housing, the minimum size wire habitat for one Flying Squirrel should be 18'; x 18'; x 24'; tall with a wire spacing maximum of 1/2.'; Bigger and taller is better. A nest box measuring 5'; x 5'; x 5'; with a removable or hinged top, should be provided to give it a dark place to sleep. A wren box does well. The nest box should be furnished with cotton, wood shavings (NOT cedar), or grass hay for bedding.

Hope this helps!Sugar glider and flying squirrel information.?
Price totally depends on where you are located and who you'd buy from. Check out http://www.glidercentral.net/ for info on sugar gliders. And check out http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/index.php for info on flying squirrels. Please, please, please research a LOT before making the decision to adopt either one. Both require specialized diets and cages - very large cages. Also, you would need to have an exotics vet as well as an emergency vet so that you can get to a vet 24 hours a day. Both of these can be very expensive. Also, gliders can live up to 15 years in captivity.
