What is the best rodent pet, rabbit, flying squirrel, rat, hamster etc?

thinking about get my nieces a rodent but would would you recommend and whyWhat is the best rodent pet, rabbit, flying squirrel, rat, hamster etc?
Unless they've had a lot of experience with pets, I'd highly recommend a pair of guinea pigs. They are sweet, sturdy, generally pretty quiet, and very very rarely bite. With patience, most will also end up being very cuddly.

If you do go with a guinea pig or two, be sure to research their space needs--most cages sold in pet stores are way too small for two (or even one) guinea pigs. However, there are some easy and inexpensive homemade options. Also, guinea pigs are social animals and will be happiest in same-sex pairs. Even two boars will usually get along provided there isn't a sow present!

The website below has some really good advice on guinea pigs. There are a lot of guinea pigs available for rescue, so consider providing a home for some of those critters before patronizing a pet shop. (And, no, I don't have any affiliation with the rescue organization!)

(As a parent, I just want to make sure: have you asked the girls' parents if it's okay with them to get a pet for the kids? Any pet will ultimately end up being the parents' responsibility, so please, please, please clear it with the folks first!)

Best wishes! What is the best rodent pet, rabbit, flying squirrel, rat, hamster etc?
