How do I care for a rescued flying squirrel?

So, I rescued a teeny flying squirrel from a parking lot earlier today. Its really wee. I'm not sure how old it is, etc. But it is about 2 inches big, excluding the tail. I've been trying to feed it formula, apples, water, etc. But it doesn't seem to want it.

Any help? How do I care for a rescued flying squirrel?
If wildlife rehab doesn't have room, try local vet offices. Until then, force feed warm puppy or kitten formula, would be my advice. Make sure it's kept warm, too.

**IF** and only *IF* you have experience force feeding before, you can go the pet store and get a syringe that's made for birds when they're weening. It has a longer, hooked end to it instead of the regular straight, short end (you may have to cut a bit off the end to make the hole larger). This allows you to get the formula further back in the mouth (but be VERY careful not to drown the poor thing). In my experience, if you can get the formula under the back of the tongue, a little to the side, the animal will swallow it more readily. The longer, thinner, and hooked tip on the bird syringes work well for this. In events where that does not work, you can get the formula directly into the esophagus (get it down the wrong tube and it dies! So do not attempt this unless you've been taught how to do it!!!).

If it is just not interested in the formula, you can try baby food.

Hope this helps and I hope the little thing is doing better! How do I care for a rescued flying squirrel?
You care for it by taking it to a Wildlife Rehabilitator - they can give him/her the proper care they need.

It's in the best interest of the Flying Squirrel that you take him/her to a Wildlife Rehabilitator. Sure, he/she might be cute, but they're not alive to please you. He/she needs to be taken care of by professionals and released back into the wild.

Good luck.
You should of done research before rescuing this animal! Do some research and a vet can help too.

Help me! i found a baby flying squirrel!?

i found and rescued a baby flying squirrel, that is said to be 5 weeks old and a northern or southern species. we are currently feeding him Esbilac. he threw it up a little while ago. hes really skinny and may be dehydrated.

i want him to live! please help!

what formulas work best? when do i feed him? how plump should he be? i dont want to give him to a animal rescue place because they have a lot of squirrels and surly they cant give 24/7 help to one, when they have so many. i can. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!Help me! i found a baby flying squirrel!?
You need to locate a wildlife rehabber in your area, IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Here is a link to my organizations website

http://www.mswildliferehab.org/

Squirrels have very specific needs and even us rehabbers need to feed them a mix of species specific formulas we get from the folks who make formulas for zoos, etc.... Technically it is against the law for you to have this little critter, but its also against the law for me, as a liscensed rehabber to tell you how to care for it. best thing to do, is to offer him PLAIN pedialyte, keep him warm, like in a smallish cardboard box, with soft towel to cuddle in and keep him dark and quiet until you can turn him over to someone who knows how to properly care for him. I have an Eastern grey Squirrel right now, who might not ever be releasable due to the improper care he received at the hands of ignorant folks who kept him for over a week cus they thot he was cute and fed him nothing but COWS MILK!!! That is the ULTIMATE SIN in wildlife rehab! This little boy was only improperly fed for a very short time, but he came to me badly dehydrated and very sick....with bald patches due to malnutrition. The hair on his tail has STILL not grown in and its now several MONTHS later. The damage is done, despite months of proper care. Get this little squirrel to a rehabber and PRONTO!Help me! i found a baby flying squirrel!?

foods:

whole un-shelled peanuts, cashews, pecans, and sugar snap peas
You should give the squirrel to a rescue place since you don't know how to take care of him. It is very possible to kill him by feeding him the wrong thing.
feed squirrel with glucose since it is dehydrating ....

i think you should send it to the vet if situation get worse, you may not want to loose it right
I'd say eat it with ketchup, and fry up some potatoes to go with it.

  • Has Anyone Owned a Pet Southern Flying Squirrel?(only answer if u have!)?

For a ';Christmas gift'; I am getting a pet Southern Flying Squirrel in 3 weeks (not the same thing as a sugar glider). I have been reaserching for over 1 year now and know ALOT about care requirements, health, and all sorts of things. I am getting her from a breeder in San Antonio, Texas called Helen's Little Critters. I was wondering if anyone who has ever owned a flyer or bought any exotic pets from Helen's Little Critters before could tell me of their experences? Did yours make a good pet? Did it live long? ext.

Ps: Flying squirrels have been domesticated for 100s of years and are NOT wild animals. They are legal pets so please dont give me any ';Wild animals shouldnt be pets'; crap. I have fully reserched this and am making the disition to get one with alot of knowlage.Has Anyone Owned a Pet Southern Flying Squirrel?(only answer if u have!)?
I have not had any experience with Helen's, but she seems to run a very reputable business if you can believe the posts on the Squirrel Board: http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/forums/s鈥?/a>

Here is a reminder - in all of your research, did you remember to check the legal status of flying squirrels in your state? They are not legal everywhere, and the National Flying Squirrel Association cautions:

';How to check if you live in a flyer friendly state:

The first step when selecting a flyer is to determine if it is legal where you live. This can be complicated as there are a variety of levels of government involved in animal regulation. Do not rely what you hear from others, including on the Internet.

    Here's How:

Call the appropriate government agencies in person. Using the Internet for research is a good place to start, but for current and complete information on the status of your chosen species, check with the proper agencies.

Start with your local government -- call city hall or your town or county office, and ask if there are any relevant laws against your pet.

Your local officials may be able to tell you the status of your pet locally as well as state, province, or country wide status.

If there are no local laws, and local officials are not sure about the status on a wider scale, they may be able to direct you to the appropriate agency to check with.

Before going to the state/province/country, check with your local health department, as sometimes regulations fall under their jurisdiction.

Check with state/provincial agencies. Hopefully the local officials could tell you which agency has jurisdiction, but it may fall under agriculture, fish and game, natural resources, wildlife, health, etc.

If you are in the US, check with the US Department of Agriculture, as many exotic species require USDA permits for possession and/or breeding.

Keep calling until you find the right agency/person who can give you a definitive answer. Sometimes permits are required for legal species, so make sure you find out if there are any special permits or licenses required.

    Tips:

Exactly who to call varies from area to area, so you'll need to break out the phone book and start calling. By starting locally, you can often find out who you need to call from higher levels of government.

Your local humane society or other pet related organization, or a veterinarian's office, may be able to help you find out about current laws.

Don't assume that if you see a pet locally, it is legal (even if they are being sold in pet stores).

    Ignorance of the law is not a good defense, and if you acquire an illegal pet you may face confiscation of your pet down the road, and possibly even euthanasia of your pet.';

    Dermoptera.

Colugos or Flying lemurs (order Dermoptera) (gliding).

Found in Southeast Asia, the colugo is probably the mammal most adapted for gliding.

Not 100% sure, but I think you mean the BAJING (BADJING).
yeah, they're actually called ';flying squirrels,'; and they're actually found in many other places as well. There are many species of them, but 2 of the species can be found right in North America.

Does anyone know a lot about Southern Flying Squirrels?

    I cut down a hollow stump and found a wild female SFS along with 3 babies. I'm wanting to release the mother once she is no longer needed for milk, and start taming the babies to not be afraid of humans. I'm needing to know ';Will it be too late/much harder to tame them after they're totally independent(eating solid foods)?';

Their eye's aren't open yet, I'd say they are around 4 weeks of age.Does anyone know a lot about Southern Flying Squirrels?
you can't just take wild flyers from the wild, and make them pets. it is wrong. yes, some people do own flyers as pets, but usually it's because they were rehabbed from the wild when their habitat was destroyed and their mother was no longer able to care for them, or when the babies were injured and not releasable. there are also a few flyer breeders. you clearly do not know how to care for the pups, and should not have them in your possession. it is very difficult to raise and tame a young flying squirrel (especially without experience), and the mother is going to be very fierce and undoubtedly attack relentlessly if you try to go near her babies. do you even know how to take care of the mother? she needs special care too. if you want a southern flyer so badly, you should take the time to research them, and then get one that was raised to be a pet for whatever reason. not one that you forced into captivity. you will most likely not get a good pet from this situation. not to mention that taking them from the wild is most likely illegal.Does anyone know a lot about Southern Flying Squirrels?
it was not a very good idea to capture the poor things. it also is not a very good idea to teach the babies to not be afraid of humans. that is going against the law of nature and think what dreadful thing might happen if a flying squirrel became friendly with humans. it would be considered a pest and would be killed.
    You touched them?

I hope the mother doesn't abandon them.

I don't think it will be too late since you have touched them already. If you keep touching them then they probably won't be harder to tame. I don't think you should tame them though, sorry.

Evolution, do you think that a Flying Squirrel will one day actually fly?

I'm not really into Evolution because I could care less, but I heard that Fish evolved from a unicellular germ or something, and the fish grew legs and came on land and became an amphibian, then the amphibian had webbed feet and hands and flew... my question is, do you think Flying Squirrel's will evolve one day to learn how to fly like that amphibious fish did? I understand if you think of me as ignorant for not knowing Evolution, but I haven't really had any interest in it until now. Please answer my question politely...Evolution, do you think that a Flying Squirrel will one day actually fly?
There's no way to know for sure. Neat question, though. It does depend on whether flying more gives it an advantage, but it also depends on how easily flying can be acquired.

I heard an interesting note on flying squirrels once, but unfortunately I can't remember the reference because it was years ago, but I think it might have actually been in an article about bats. The main point of the article was that it is thought that two different lineages of bats evolved convergently from different land mammals. Since their flight evolved from membranes around their hands, they both ended up looking similar, and they both ended up being very good fliers because the hands have lots of muscles and bones that can be adjusted into great wings. Birds are similar too in that their feathers basically turned one of their front legs into a wing, and that front leg has a lot of bones and muscles with potential for flight adaptation.

The flying squirrels, on the other hand, have developed a membrane between their arms and legs, and it is a lot more difficult to turn that area into a functional wing because there are no bones or anything spanning that area. So the argument was that the flying squirrel might be a sort of evolutionary dead end in the flying catagory. Another piece to back up that argument is that there is a marsupial called the sugar glider that is very similar to the flying squirrel, but completely unrelated, which indicates that it also developed an arm-to-leg membrane that gives great gliding capability, but it was also not able to develop it into a flying wing.

    Given millions of years, however, there's just no way to know. It might also be possible that something we cannot imagine might evolve out of those gliding membranes--for example maybe they will start using them to capture prey and they will eventually evolve to be bigger and bigger prey capturing membranes until they are man-eating-membrane-digesting monsters that live in trees and land on people and devour them with their poisonous membrane sacks. I'm having fun here, of course, but trying to make the point that a lot of future scenarios are possible. Evolution does not look forward and say ';gee, I'd like to have a wing, I think I'll develop one like those birds over there.';

Edit: Oh yeah, and be careful asking evolution questions in this forum because you will get crashed with a bunch of links to christian bible sites. You can also debate whether gravity exists or if it's just God pushing you down on earth until your body dies, but that discussion should be in the religion forums, not the science ones. It's your choice whether you want to base your beliefs on religious dogma or on science, but since you asked the question in a science forum, I tried to give you a science answer. I don't crash other forums.Evolution, do you think that a Flying Squirrel will one day actually fly?
If it were advantageous to their survival, possibly. What would happen is the squirrels that were better at gliding would continue to survive and pass on their genes and those that weren't so hot at it would die, essentially filtering out the population and each generation they would get better and better and better at it and on and on and on until it devoloped into full-blown flying. It would take a long time and many, many generations to reach that point but it is possible.
Unlikely. Thy are too specialized for gliding. Flying animals (bats, birds, insects) all evolved from relatively unspecialized ancestors. They had to develop a lot more than gliding flaps (some snakes, lizards, and frogs have done the same thing independently.); they also need huge chest muscles and a keeled sternum to attach the muscle to.
    ';...do you think that a Flying Squirrel will one day actually fly?';

    Not a chance! :-)

Consider a few facts for starters:

-- The law of biogenesis: we see creatures giving rise to their own kinds only.

-- We never see any creatures evolving into a more complex, different kind of creature. Evolution of this sort has never once been observed.

Variation within kinds which we do observe in finches, moths, etc. is not the same as amoeba-to-man evolution, and this variation within kinds has never once been seen to lead to one type of creature evolving into another. The finches remain finches and the moths remain moths. Always.

Science deals with what you can see, observe, record, test, repeat, etc.

Since it has never been seen, amoeba-to-man evolution can not be demonstrated or supported with the scientific method. The current atomic theory can; the theory of gravity can; but evolution can鈥檛. How many experiments have been done that give convincing evidence of even one transition within amoeba-to-man evolution? None.

Amoeba-to-man evolution has never been seen, repeated, recorded, etc., so it is neither a scientific theory nor even a scientific idea. It's a conjecture, an unsupported leap of faith, and worse: a lie, since God already said how He made things.

Should I get a Flying Squirrel or a Sugar Glider?

Can you take a Flying Squirrel outside or will it try to get away ? Are Squirrels more aggressive ? Which one would you prefer and why ? im geting a pet flying squirrel and the only thing im worried about is the fact that it could live 10-15 years! is a flying squirrel the kind of pet where the excitment will eventually wear off and ill kind of hav to force myself to play with him like a hamster or a turtle? or will a squirrel be mor of a companion like a dog, and he'll be like my best friend that i'll want to always hav with me? thanks and i hope this question is understandableFor all the flying squirrel owners out there.....?
i answered your other post... but i'd like to also add here that they are not like dogs. it can be lots of tough love. they might not want to 'play' with you in the way you want to play. my flyer likes to jump to me and from me, but then wants to be left alone. and they can live 10-15 years... make sure you don't have any false expectations about flyers. they won't interact with you like a dog or cat, but they are still fun to play with and observe. For all the flying squirrel owners out there.....?
if you have doubts, do not even get the little creature. people who feel the need to get exotic pets should examine their motives.

I found a flying squirrel... what do I do?

I found a flying squirrel in our garage this moring. I am very worried though, because we have a cat and our neighbors have to dogs. It wouldn't be so bad, because I put the cat in our laundry room, but it's an open garage and there is no way to close it. What should I do, for I fear the poor thing is scared out of its wits. Right now it is sleeping and from what I can tell, it's a baby.

Should I try to take it off the wall and carry it to the woods behind our house? If not, what should I do?! Please help!I found a flying squirrel... what do I do?
First thing to do is figure out for sure if it is an adult or a baby. Or if it's injured.

If it's a healthy adult, it will leave on it's own come evening. If it's a baby, or injured, you'll need to get it to a Wildlife Rehabilitator. If you can walk up to it without it running away, it needs assistance.

If you think it needs care, you can trap it within a pillow case, tied tightly so that it can not escape. Use heavy gloves if attempting to handle it, they have very sharp teeth.

Call your local DEC, vet, or humane society for a list of Rehabbers in your are.

Good luck.I found a flying squirrel... what do I do?
I would turn him over to a local vet clinic or animal rescue. They can make sure he is properly nourished (if he's a baby and the mom's not around, he needs an alternative way to eat). Use Google to see if you can find one in your area.

PET differences between Flying Squirrel & Sugar Glider?

I was just wondering what the differences between PET sugar gliders and flying squirrels are?

Yes, I know one is a marsupial and from Australia, but I am more interested in their differences as pets.

I have heard that since Flying Squirrels are rodents they don't have a scent gland and are less smelly. I also know they don't live as long.

Are either litter trainable and which ones are friendlier? Which make the better pets?

Thanks :)PET differences between Flying Squirrel %26amp; Sugar Glider?
Hi there...both can be good pets, however both are very different in nature therefore it depends on what you are looking for in a pet.

Flying squirrels do not put off the odours unlike the sugar glider so they are less stinky, but equally as messy as gliders.

Both are social critters requiring attention therefore they both require physical attention ';daily'; at least for an hour. They are a social animal and depriving them of any attention they will actually die from lonliness as this causes depression. They can live up to 15 years so these are not a pet for someone who is enamoured by them for a couple months and then forgotten. They do better with a mate rather than alone since they are colony animals. In the wild both live in groups on average of 12-20 together. They need at least an hour to two hours of play time daily to stay socialized and well adjusted.

Sugar gliders require fresh fruits and vegetables daily and need insects (e.g. meal worms, crickets) since they are also insectivores. Flying squirrels also need some nuts for plant protein as well as supplemental pellet diet. Both need vitamin supplements as they suffer from hind-leg paralysis since they cannot get these minerals from the diets we feed them like they do in the wild. In their natural environment they also eat small animals (like small mice) to get those much needed minerals.

Both species need toys and an enclosure that is a minimum of 3 feet high by 1.5 feet wide by 1.5 feet deep as they like to jump and glide. Anything smaller is too confining and can lead to health problems.

It's important to find a vet that can care for exotic animals as many regular vets may not have the specialized training to medically treat a sugar glider. Many vets however may know of a local vet in your region who treats exotics.

Sugar gliders defecate and urinate everywhere except their sleeping pouches and mostly when they first wake up. They have a natural scent that some people may find a little pungent and it can become strong if the cage isn't cleaned out and washed down weekly. The vocalizations they make are barking which is equivalent to small yapping dog (at lower volume) and a hisssssing sound. They also make a crabbing noise when angry, startled or frightened which sounds like a broken electric pencil sharpener.

Flying squirrels will be similar in their voiding habits (e.g. defecation and urination).

Both can be friendly if they have been hand tamed well enough when young otherwise they will revert to the wild-like natures.

It's bedding should be something soft in a small box, secured from the cat. My advice is, since you don't know how to deal with the animal take it to the vet as soon as possible. You are giving the creature a death sentence if you don't allow a properly trained individual to rehabilitate it.

Southern Flying Squirrel in our home?

we had a flying squirrel in our house 4 days ago and on that first day we encountered him after 2 hours we finally got him contained into our small computer room. Now on the fourth day he finally entered our trap that contains the animal in a cage so you can set him free, but the problem is that the squirrel is breathing heavy and isn't moving around so much. I was thinking that he was extremely frightened because my dad and dog had to chase him earlier to get him in the cage because 4 days was getting to long and we wanted him out because my mom needs the computer for work.

Anyway, we were going to let him out but i think he might die? I was wondering if any people out there reading this knows anything about squirrels, (if there hybernating right now, or what food they like so i can feed him before we let him go) anything that would help because i dont want him to die.Southern Flying Squirrel in our home?
Defiantly take him to a vet immediately!!!!!

    Flying Red Box Squirrel Problem?

I have a problem with some flying squirrels in my neighborhood and I can't get rid of them! They are native to the Las Vegas valley. They are terrorizing the stray dogs in our trailer park. I'm fixin to go crazy! What should I do?Flying Red Box Squirrel Problem?
They're smart enough to know these dogs don't belong in the area and are trying to run them off. Leave them alone and you won't have a stray dog problem...I'd rather have some squirrels running around than a bunch of stray dogs.Flying Red Box Squirrel Problem?
I have never heard of red flying squirrels only northern and southern flying squirrels. However if I were you I would put up some boxes for them to nest in and a feeder for their benefit and leave them strictly alone .
If they are native to that area there is nothing you can do. Most animal control units will not remove an animal from it's natural habitat...Have you ever thought the squirrels might be mad that your living in there habitat???We must respect nature because without nature there would be no earth to live on every single creature on this planet has a purpose!!
make friends with them their really friendly i have one as a pet.
Call animal control duh dont mean to sound roude but call animal control

    Flying squirrel bonding?

Hi, i once heard that in order to bond with a flying squirrel, you must carry in a bonding pouch 4-6 hours a day. however , im way to busy for this. i go to school at 7:30 and come home at 7:30. i was wondering if i could where a t-shirt for a couple of days and then stick it in the cage. i would still keep it in a bonding pouch as much as i could. then, if this method works ,after it bonds to me i would play with it for maybe 3 hours a day.... would this be ok? And please, i dont want any answers saying oh their wild animal, they shouldnt be kept as pets their endangered, blah blah blah. there not even endangered. please helpFlying squirrel bonding?
I'm sorry, but part of the bonding process is carrying it in a pouch 4-6 hours a day for about 3 months. What do you mean ';maybe 3 hours a day';? That is the MINIMUM. They are a LOT of work. Trust me, wait until you get out of school or have about 5 free hours a day for them until you purchase them. Email me @ suggielover97@gmail.com if you have any more questions.

Can anyone explain how Flying Squirrels evolved?

I can see how birds evolved, but what was the mechanics of something that just wanted some flappy skin so it could glide further? Do you think they will be birds in 100000's of years?

I don't want to fly, just glide a little. Can anyone explain how Flying Squirrels evolved?
The great thing about flying squirrels is that they are an excellent example of a transitional form.

Creationists often ask ';what use is half a wing';, hoping to prove that a creature couldn't evolve a wing as it would be useless for the thousands of generations before it became fully-formed. But flying squirrels are the counter-example - the flap of skin they use to glide with isn't a fully-formed wing, and yet it is useful for the squirrel.

To address your question, it's important to realise that it doesn't make sense to say something ';wanted'; anything. Evolution has no aim and no foresight. It simply acts on what happens.

In the case of the flying squirrels, to understand how they evolved you just have to think of normal squirrels leaping from tree to tree. Occasionally a squirrel is born with slightly more skin under its arms - probably it was hardly noticeable. And yet this tiny bit of skin gave the squirrel a very small advantage when leaping - it meant it could leap that bit further, or if it fell it was able to slow its descent just a tiny bit. And this was enough for squirrels with the extra skin to find a bit more food, or escape from predators a bit more easily. And that's all evolution requires - just a tiny advantage relative to the rest of the population.

So the squirrel with the extra skin reproduced, and its descendants were more successful than everyone else. Occasionally some of these descendants were themselves born with a bit more skin - and this made them in turn even more successful. And so on. Eventually we got the flying squirrels we have today.

It's impossible to predict what will happen in the future, but potentially the squirrels will continue to evolve in this way and develop true flight - in which case future scientists could look back at our squirrels and say that they were a transitional form. They won't be birds of course, since birds aren't descended from mammals. Maybe they will be more similar to bats - but they won't actually be bats, since we already have bats and they aren't descended from squirrels. They will be something new.Can anyone explain how Flying Squirrels evolved?
Industrial revolution? I mean you'd learn to fly PDQ if someone was cuttin down ya tree now wouldn't ya. lol

    Sorry couldn't resist, good question.
Thank you Lord, finally someone who understands Evolution.

    Well done Daniel R.

To add just a sentence or two.....

I would like to point out the importance of choosing a successful mate. In that all the good genes are more likely to accumulate in a beneficially changed animal.

And that those changes would be more likely (genetically) in that animals offspring.
Check out flyingsquirrels.com Cute little things - look like bats when flying.
squirrels migrated to a region were the trees were very tall the ones that fell or had climb up and down huge trees with little or no nuts probably died were as the ones that mutated to have flaps of skin did not have to waste valuable energy scurrying down large trees and going up another and would not fall as quickly or directly as the others.

    just a guess

';the flying squirrel of north america closely resembles the flying pholanger of australia they are similar in

size and have long bushy tails and skin folds that allow them to glide through the air the squirrel is a placental mammal, while the pholanger is a marsupial these close resembances even though genetically and geographically separated by great distances can best be explained by

    a.convergent evolution

    b.divergent evolution

    c.spontaneous generation

    d.vestigial structures

within a decade of the introduction of a new insecticide, nearly all of the descendants of the target pests were immune to the usual sized dose. the most likely explanation for this immunity to the insecticide is that

    a. eating the insecticide caused the bugs to become resistant to it

b.eating the insecticide caused the bugs to become less resistant to it.

    c. it destroyed organisms that cause disease in the insects, thus allowing them to live longer

d.it selected random mutations that were present in the insect population and that provided immunity to the insecticide

mutations such as polyploidy and crossing over provi';the flying squirrel of north america closely resembles the flying pholanger of australia they are similar in
When two unrelated species develop similar adaptations it is called convergent evolution.

resistance to insecticides (or any ';pesticide';) is usually a result of natural selection.

    Chinchilla or flying squirrel???

Which one should i get?????Chinchilla or flying squirrel???
I have a chinchilla and what some of the other people are saying about them pooping all the time is false. I can hold mine for hours and it does not ever poop on me. They are just like cats, they know where they can poop and where they can't. On the other hand about sugar gliders, they DO urinate all over the place and they are NOT potty trained and can NOT be. They like to bite you and the hang on your curtains and they can be very mean animals. Don't get me wrong, chins can be mean too if not treated right. I would advise you to get a chin and make sure it is a small baby when you get it so you can train it to you and make it tame. I have included a website that tells about sugar gliders and how they like to bite and claw at things. I hope this helps. GOOD LUCK.Chinchilla or flying squirrel???
Flying squirrels are not legal to have as pets- in most places, they are threatened, or extremely close to being so with many forests being cut down, or pruned. They require a cavity to hibernate in during the cold winter months, and many of those trees are gone because they aren't ';pretty';. While they are friendly (I have worked with both the northern and southern species in a zoo), they are not available as pets.

If someone is trying to sell you one, report them- it is illegal.

So therefore my suggestion would be a chinchilla
DON';T GET A CHINCHILLA!. They are cute, soft, and can be cuddly, but they poop like every 2 seconds. My mom calls them ';shitter critters.'; Although if you are prepared for that and want to hold a towel under it every time you play with it, a chinchilla can be a fun pet.
oh my gosh I'm having the same complication i found a sugar glider for sale where in live and the currently have chinchillas at petsmart.

    look at this pic:

I have a sugar glider - its like a flying squirrel anyone else?

I have 5! They're so sweet :) To answer a few questions from above me, they can't fly, but they do glide quite a ways. I have a pair and a trio, they sleep all curled up together in a bundle - they always argue about who gets to be at the bottom of the pile! Out of all 5 of mine, my youngest boy is the only one who really likes being held. The rest just like to play!I have a sugar glider - its like a flying squirrel anyone else?
No....I don't have one but I think they are really cool looking. Are they nocturnal? Do they sleep in a little ball? Do they like to be held? What's the best part about having a sugar glider? Can they really fly?

Should i get a flying squirrel.?

pros con from real flying squirrel ownersShould i get a flying squirrel.?
sureShould i get a flying squirrel.?
    Expected Life Span: 10-12 years.

Size: 8-10 inches, including the tail.

    Weight: 2-4 ounces.

Natural Distribution: Southern and eastern United States.

Legal Status as Pets: you must check the legality of keeping southern flying squirrels as pets as the laws vary in different states, provinces, and countries. Especially in areas where they are native, it may be illegal to keep them as pets, or a permit may be required.

Temperament: Southern flying squirrels form a very deep bond with their owners if acquired at a young age - are usually quite happy to spend time climbing and playing on their owner or sleeping in a pocket or bonding pouch on their owner.

Habits: Southern flying squirrel are nocturnal, although they can adapt to spending time with their owners during the day if provided with a pouch or pocket for sleeping. A gliding membrane extends from the fore leg to the hind leg when the legs are extended and allows them to glide from perch to perch, sometimes as far as 150 feet (but only in a downward direction).

Feeding: In the wild, Southern flying squirrels eat a variety of nuts, seeds, fruits, and insects. In captivity they seem to do well pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pecans, walnuts, acorns and hickory nuts, supplemented with bird seed mix, and a variety of fresh veggies (corn and sweet potoatoes are popular)and fruit. Mealworms and waxworms can also be offered, and occasional treats of hard boiled egg or chicken can add a bit of protein to the diet. They are said to love moths, too.

Supplements: Flying squirrels are susceptible to calcium deficiency, so a supplement of calcium and vitamin D3 (important in calcium metabolism) should be used on their food, and items high in phophorous should be limited. A calcium block or cuttlebone should also be provided in the cage, along with a mineral block.

Housing: Since Southern flying squirrel are not large they can make do with a fairly small cage, but to thrive they need room to run and climb. Vertical space is more important than floor space though, so a tall cage is best. A cage designed for sugar gliders can work well, as long as the spacing in the mesh is narrow (1/2 inch by 1 inch at most). Some owners find that a homemade cage works well too. Keep in mind that Southern flying squirrels are excellent chewers, so make sure they cannot chew their way out of their cage (any wood or plastic should be covered with wire). Floor space of 2 feet by 2 feet is adequate, but the taller the cage, the better.

Provide branches in the cage, for both climbing and chewing. Cotton ropes hung in the cage also provide opportunity for climbing and play. Nest boxes should be provided along with facial tissues or paper towel for nesting material (avoid anything with threads that could wrap around and damage a leg). The bottom of the cage can be lined with bedding or litter appropriate for rodents (i.e. no cedar shavings - see Top Alternatives to Cedar Shavings for advice).

Water should be provided in a shallow open bowl. Southern flying squirrels have been known to have problems with sipper tubes on water bottles.

As mentioned above, branches can be used as chew toys, as can wood pieces, wood parrot toys, etc. Whole, hard shelled nuts also provide chewing opportunities as well as being tasty treats.

A running wheel is also recommended for exercise. A solid surface wheel such as the Wodent Wheel is the safest choice.

A good source of information about keeping flying squirrels as well as a place to connect with other owners is the National Flying Squirrel Association site.
Flying squirrel's owners will always have scratch marks all over their arms and body. They are high maintenance pets and owners tend to get tired of taking care of pets that demand a lot so it's likely they will disown them, so you will too. You don't sound like an experienced exotic pet owner so consider of getting easy-to-take-care-of pets like cat or dog. I am kind of person who like easy pets without lot of demands and I own a cat without a problem

watch this and realize why you wouldn't want one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mlwzf_bq鈥?/a>
nooo. trust me. they look ahh-dorable, but they bite really hard. and are very scared of you. mine used to practically live in the corner of its cage and it never moved. unless you like claw marks on you arms and chest, i advise you dont get one...(and they can fit through the smallest of holes!)
I do not own a flying squirrel, but I heard that they are pretty hard to keep up with, and I wouldn't get one unless you really have time and are devoted to taking care of it.
they are easy to take care of but what ever room they are in will smell extremely bad
Squirrels do have claws and teeth which they use frequently.
    I wouldn't!

    Help! Flying Squirrel Math!?

It is known (only in my head, this a math question) that pygmy flying squirrels normally have a weight distributed with a mean of 40 grams and that the standard deviation from this mean is 3.5g. If 4000 pygmy flying squirrels inhabit one area, how many would weight more than 49grams?

    'Pet' flying squirrel problem,?

We raised a litter of orphaned flying squirrels to maturity, let them outside, built nest boxes in a tree in the yard then and then every chance they got back in the house they came! The main trouble is that they sneaking inside and chewing everything up they find. Don,t tell me to ';close the doors and windows'; I already do that and it seems they have a pact with the devil to get inside again.'Pet' flying squirrel problem,?
they are not outdoor pets then

they have been raised as pets and are now tame i would say the best thing is

    1.put them in a cage

    2. put them in the shed and put food outside and slowley reduce the amount of food so they have to look for some themselves

    3. catch them and take them to a humane society

4.put nets/those hangy things over your doors and windows so you know you can get through but they can't

  • Dazed Flying Squirrel... HELP!?

Ok this is the thing my Brother works in the woods which I don't agree with but anyway he came over today and handed me a box with some gloves and was going to leave I was like hold up nooo way what is it this time, he said they cut a tree and the lil Squirrels hit the ground and was stunned and looked hurt, there were 4 of them and so he brought me one to take care of, other than looking a lil dazed it seems ok, but now what? I gave it a bed a water bottle and some bird seed, some mealworms and hamster food. He looks so scared do you think he will live and do you think he will ever tame down after being in the wild? I think it was born last year it's not full grown yet but it's not a baby!Dazed Flying Squirrel... HELP!?
If he does not appear to be injured, just keep him comfy in the box and keep feeding him. If you can, get a large cage that you would use for a hamster or something like that, and be sure it has a wheel so he can exercise.Dazed Flying Squirrel... HELP!?
let the squirrel go for heaven sakes. He is fine and that is good. Let him go.
Ahh I love squirrels, they come in our yard for snacks and chase each other around the trees, they are so cute! Anyway, this site should be of great help to you.

    www.squirrel-rehab.org
ur brother is so rude, he shouldn't give you a box and just walk away. well, just ask your rude brother for some advice
i think it is scared from never being handled by anything. it is hard to say if it will get tamed or not. a small animal like that will be hard to tame. good luck though. (i think it is sweet of u to be taking care of a stray animal. especialy a flying squirel.)
Your lil' critter should be fine, if its moving about, and has not suffered internal damage by the fall. Best thing to do is to keep fresh water available to it, and also alow it plenty of time to get used to it's surroundings. Keep it in a warm, quiet place, and if its ok by tommarow moring, best thing is to let it go. If its not a baby and can fend for its self it will do just fine. Also try offering it some corn, kernals if you have them. Its likly to like it.
feed him bready milk and handle as little as possible or he/she may go into shock.after a while you will find that they will come to you naturally

Do flying squirrels make good pets?

I'm thinking about adopting a one year old flying squirrel but I read that they bond to usually one person if gotten at a young age.

Do they make good pets in general? Do flying squirrels make good pets?
they are nothing like hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, etc. they require A LOT more care. they can be fun, but you need to accept them on their own terms. they honestly are wild animals, and some people do not quite put them in the pet category. they can't really be trained, and they will chew anything that they feel like chewing (wires, books, etc.) they need supervised exercise outside the cage at least one hour a night, and they are lightning fast when they run around. they can also climb anything they can grip (including door molding). so a flying squirrel is not the right pet for everyone. you need to be willing to take full responsibility for it. check out this link for 'responsible flyer ownership' http://www.nfsa.us/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?鈥?/a>

in terms of it bonding to you, it depends how much it was socialized at a younger age, how tame it is now, and how much time you can spend with it. in order to successfully transfer a bond, you're going to need to dedicate hours to it.Do flying squirrels make good pets?
I can't imagine them being much different from a hamster, guinea pig, kitten, ferret...

I suspect you would cage the animal when not supervised.

As far as bonding is concerned, animals learn from their mother.

If a human spends a lot of time with the animal as it grows, then it will grow accustomed to the particular characteristics of the human.

You would simply need to have an idea of the personality of the one who initially raised it. If you are somewhat similar, then it will easily adapt. If you are very different, well, it will still adapt in time.

If you were meant to be free and wild would you want someone to take you into an environment you did not want or like being in?There is a reason these things are called wildlife.Think long and hard and you will make the right and smart choice for this animal.
No. Any wild animal must be treated as that, a wild animal. An animal is not domesticated until it's been bred that way for multiple generations.
    Not really they're pretty restless
they would if they exsist well i think they do but some people dont.
oh yes i have 3 flying squirrels
    NO, NO, AND NO
haha . oh yeah they are great ! Happy Oktoberfest. i can tell from your Avatar.
i dont reccomend one they can ruin your home as they fly and jump on things
I have a friend on metal gear online that is a flying squirrel (NOOB)

Sugar glider / flying squirrel ?

what's the different between sugar gliders and flying squirrel ?

are they both same ??Sugar glider / flying squirrel ?
Most importantly, they reproduce and bear their babies in fundamentally different ways:

Flying squirrels are placental mammals. Placental mammals spend a long time developing inside the mother's body being nourished by a placenta before they are born.

Sugar gliders are marsupial mammals, like kangaroos. Marsupial mammals may only spend a short time developing inside the mother's body and are very tiny when born. After birth, a baby marsupial crawls into its mother's pouch and is nourished by her milk as it continues to grow and develop.

Flying squirrels and sugar gliders are only distantly related. So why do they look so similar then? Their gliding ';wings'; and big eyes are analogous structures. Natural selection independently adapted both lineages for similar lifestyles: leaping from treetops (hence, the gliding ';wings';) and foraging at night (hence, the big eyes).

Sugar glider / flying squirrel ?

and a flying squirrel is a flying squirrel.. they're different

Call your local emergency vet and get the number of a wild animal rescue, they will most likely take it. In the meantime, keep it in soft cloth and, if you have one, put a heating pad under it on a VERY low setting. If the rescue operation can't take it, they will most likely be able to tell you how to take care of it yourself. I raised three baby squirells with a rescue's help. It was a really nice experience. Good luck and Happy New Year to you too.
Call the Dept. of Conservation they will often give advice or even take the animal. My sister once took a bird to a local zoo.
    TO the wildlife centre ASAP!
Your local pet supplies will have the milk mix that you can use to raise the squirrel. If you want to keep it, that is. They are easy to feed and are alot of fun when they get older. If its eyes aren't open yet, you need to bottle feed it every 2 hours, just like a kitten. Make sure to keep it warm, if you keep it indoors with room temp you shouldn't need a heating pad. You will also need to assist in using the bathroom. If you don't think this is something you want to do, it takes alot of time. Call a local vet for a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. They will take it off your hands.
You could ask an animal rescue shelter and see if they will take it for you. i think that squirells eat acorns and nuts, if it is a baby though I would take the shells off for it especially while it is injured. You shouldnt do that forever though it will never learn how to do it itself then.Good luck, i would definetly talk to a vet or a pet shop worker or an animal rescue shelter.
Call an Emergency vet center, or zoo or anything related to animals, sry... I don`t know what to do. I hope the lil` guy lives.
    go to a vet...

    do research online

to recieve the most accurate information

    IMMEDIATELY!
i have raised 2 baby flying squirrels, both brought to me by my cats! First get a small animal baby bottle, usually Winn Dixie carries them, get a can of Pet evaporated milk, fill bottle half milk and 1/4 water add a little white Karo syrup and a tiny pinch of salt

warm and feed to baby, feed about every 2-3 hours, keep baby warm and secure in a box with towels, you can email me if need be
do you have a wildlife center nearby? they would know how to take care of him.

But you have to be careful squirrels can get rabies.. so call a vet asap to make sure you and your cat are okay too!
You need a heating pad, a bottle with a small nipple, and your nearest pet shop should have formula that is ussually used for kittens or puppies, it works on squirrels too. O and make sure you wipe its bottom to stimulate the process of pooping.

Does anyone know of anything I can put in my attic to discourage flying squirrels?

I read recently that installing a strobe light in the attic will drive them away. Hang it high, and set it to go off every few seconds. I'd probably use an old strobe from my 35mm photography days. Sounds fairly humane, doesn't it?Does anyone know of anything I can put in my attic to discourage flying squirrels?
A scented candle, unlit, preferably one that is not flowery or sweet (or you'll get bees and wasps). Citronella is to be avoided since attics are close and you might want to buy four or more candles and place them at different places in the attic. We found that Black Licorice and Pectoula (not sure about the spelling on that one) worked very well. Hope this helps.Does anyone know of anything I can put in my attic to discourage flying squirrels?

    Explain the norther flying squirrel?

    ';Northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is one of two species of the genus Glaucomys, the only flying squirrels found in North America (the other is the somewhat smaller Southern flying squirrel, G. volans). Flying squirrels are strictly nocturnal. The Northern flying squirrel is found in coniferous and mixed forests across the top of North America, from Alaska to Nova Scotia, south to North Carolina and west to California. Populations from the Pacific Coast of the United States are genetically distinct from those of G. sabrinus found elsewhere in North America, although they are considered to belong to the same species. Two subspecies are found in the southern Appalachians, the Carolina Northern flying squirrel, G. s. coloratus, and the Virginia Northern flying squirrel G. s. fuscus, both of which are endangered.';

The most notable difference is sugar gliders have white on their face, while flying squirrels do not. Also, sugar gliders have a black stripe that usually extends down their back.

If you are certain it is a sugar glider, then they eat a wide range of things (they are omnivores). 'Offered on a four day rotation with one item offered from the following list daily:

Gut loaded mealworms - Feed 10-12 small, 7-10 medium, or 3-5 large mealworms per glider

Gut loaded crickets - Feed 3-5 crickets per sugar glider

Boiled eggs (without shells) mixed with high protein/low sugar cereal (like corn flakes or Special K) and mixed with either honey or apple juice. One heaping tablespoon is offered per 2 sugar gliders.

Yogurt (blueberry or peach) - 1 heaping tablespoon is offered per 2 sugar gliders'

If you need more information, please seek help from your local vet. He may be sick due to another reason besides just diet.

    Sugar Glider Nutrition

By now you've probably read all kinds of articles on feeding sugar gliders and may even feel a little overwhelmed by the variety of opinions and suggestions that you see.聽 Let's simplify the whole feeding issue.聽 This is SunCoast Sugar Gliders feeding plan easy as food groups 1- 2 - 3.

    1) Feed your glider a portion of fresh fruits or vegetables.聽 We feed them a single fruit or veggie each day and vary the choice each day.聽 For example, tonight may be apples, tomorrow pears, the next day sweet potatoes, the following day cantaloupe, etc.聽

    2) Feed your glider an almost equal portion of protein.聽 We are strong advocates of sugar gliders getting at least 50% protein in their diets.聽 We use the following for protein sources and vary them each night: Chicken or turkey baby food, mealworms, crickets, boiled eggs (plain or mixed with a protein cereal and a dab of honey or apple juice).聽 We also alternate yogurt (with fruit) as part of this category as they babies seem to do very well with yogurt.

Food groups one and two should be fed in the evening with any uneaten foods removed in the morning to prevent spoilage.聽

    3) Feed your glider some source of dry food that will be left in the cage for twenty four hours.聽 We use a combination of dry foods and mix them in a coffee grinder until the babies have developed a taste for them.聽 The glider should be getting most of its nutrition from the previous two categories, but they will eat more some days than others and the dry food is a great supplement for them to snack on.聽

We use ZooKeeper's Secret Insectivore / Omnivore diet and berries %26amp; bugs.聽 Fresh portions of the staple food should be left in the cage 24 hours a day.聽 Sometimes sugar gliders will soil the staple food and the food should be changed out when that happens.聽 Never give your glider an inexpensive dry cat food as it could cause intestinal blockage or urinary tract problems.

Be sure that your glider is eating some from each group 1 %26amp; 2.聽 If they don't eat a lot of group 3, it is not a cause for concern as they are filling up on the fresh, healthy foods found in the first two categories.聽 If your glider seems to be eating all of its fruit and barely eating from the protein sources, then skip the fruit one or two nights a week to force them to consume more protein.聽 Some gliders can be picky eaters and only pick out the things they like best, so observation is key to maintaining your gliders' healthy diet.聽

There are certainly other diet plans available such as Leadbeater's mix or the Taronga Zoo Diet.聽 You will want to keep your glider on a diet similar to ours when you get it, and if you choose to use a different formula, then make the change gradually.聽

Last, but not least, you will want to supplement your gliders' vitamin and mineral intake.聽 We use Vionate and Rep-Cal daily and sprinkle it on the serving of fruit or veggies.聽 You may also administer vitamins and minerals by adding to a small serving of apple juice or nectar.聽 You never want to mix vitamins with the glider water supply as this can create growth in the water bottle that may not be healthy.
I don't know what sugar gliders eat but they have pouches because they are marsupials. Flying squirrels are mammals so they don't have a pouch.

    Pet Flying Squirrel problem...?

I just acquired a Southern Flying Squirrel as a pet from my friend who couldn't take care of him after three years. I took him into the house with his cage that he had before I got him and of course he was nervous and scared.

After having him for a few days I tried to bond with him by putting some food in my hand (parrot food) he would run into my hand, but instead of eating the food all he does is bite my nails. I am a man and have somewhat short nails. I have heard of the apple vinegar idea but that would just make the bonding much more difficult. Please help me!!!Pet Flying Squirrel problem...?
just use a bittering agent like Ipecac syrup on them, that should stop him from biting, sweet pet tho, when I was a kid we used to have a pair that were found in the laundry room I loved how visitors would freak out when they flew off a cupboard and land on them.

Please tell me the pros and cons on owning sugar gliders also known as flying squirrels. thanks?

i see them advertised now and then and this is one rodent i havent had. lolol i love animals. Please tell me the pros and cons on owning sugar gliders also known as flying squirrels. thanks?
Gliders are not rodents, they are marsupials. They are also not flying squirrels, that is a different pet, with very different care requirements.

Sugar gliders are very high maintenance pets. They are expensive to purchase and even more money to keep. They range from $150 and up, depending on colors. Overall start up cost(including gliders, toys, cage, etc) is at least $1000, and sometimes more.

    Temperament:

Sugar gliders are extremely active and very social animals and do not like to live alone. If you would like to own a sugar glider, plan on having more than one. A lonely sugar glider who is deprived of social interaction, will not thrive. They will become depressed and lonely, which can cause them to die. They need interaction with their owners to be happy.

Remember that they are nocturnal and are up all night and sleep all day. My gliders used to wake up at about 11pm and were up until about 7am. During the day they didn't like being bothered, imagine someone wanting you to get up and play at 3 in the morning. I am an insomniac and was up all night anyway, so I didn't mind. When I did want to sleep it was difficult, they are very noisy at night, jumping around and barking and chirping. I used to get woken up several times.

Gliders should be purchased when they are young. Older gliders are hard to tame and may never enjoy being with you.

    Bonding

Gliders must be able to be carried by you during the day in order to bond. I was lucky enough to have a job that didn't mind that I had them with me. You cannot sneak them around with you, as occasionally they will crab, or bark. They are loud barkers.

It you are not able to carry them for at least a few your a day in a bonding pouch then they may not take to you.

Even as a bonded pet, they are still not cuddly. A friendly glider is pretty much one that will not bite you and will jump from the cage to you. You're pretty much a bridge for them to get to where they really want :) They do not like being pet or held, I used to just have them jump from the cage to me and back.

    Feeding

The feeding requirements of a sugar glider are somewhat controversial. It is only recently they have been kept as pets, and needs are somewhat of a mystery. As time goes on people will learn more about the needs of these little creatures. Sugar gliders are omnivorous, meaning they will eat plant material and meat. In the wild they feed from nectar, fruit, insects and even small birds, eggs or rodents. This diet is pretty hard to replicate in captivity. People feed them a variety of foods trying to mimic their natural diet as best they can. Some people feed insects such as crickets, mealworms, waxworms, moths and spiders. The insects should be fed high quality food such as commercial cricket food, and dusted with a complete vitamin/mineral supplement. Hence their name, the sugar glider loves the taste of sugar. They like fruit cocktail. The fruit should be fed in small amounts, chopped together so the gliders can not just pick out their favorites. There are many different diets that can be fed. These diets cannot be mixed and match and must be fed according to directions. Incorrect diet can cause serious health issues. Some diets you may want to research

BML, Taronga Zoo Diet, Chicago Zoological Park Alternative Diet , Darcy's Sugar Glider Diet , Elwin's Fresh Food Diet, Priscilla Price's Sugar Glider Diet, Suncoast Glider Diet Plan, etc(there are a few more to this list)

    Cage:

A large cage, the bigger the better, should be provided with plenty of things to jump and leap off of (a minimum of 24 x 24 inches, by 36 inches high). For a sugar glider, height is more valuable than floor space. A wire cage, wire should be no more than 陆 inch wide, is best to allow the cage to breathe. A plastic tub can be placed under the cage to catch any debris that may fall out of the cage. Lots of toys should be provided as well as an exercise wheel, nest box and/or glider pouch. Branches, ropes and ladders will provide lots of opportunity for climbing and exercise. Large cage is a must, if you do not have the space or $$$ to buy an appropriate cage then do not get a glider.

    Vet care

Since gliders are exotic their veterinary care will cost more. You will need to find a sugar glider knowledgeable vet before you purchase a glider. With gliders becoming more popular as pets, it is at least not as difficult to find a glider knowledgeable vet.

    Other info

Male sugar gliders have a unique smell that some people find unbearable. I used to have to clean mine daily(scrubbing cage, washing bedding, cleaning toys) to keep the smell down. The males have scent glands and they mark their territory. Females do not have as bad a smell as males. The cage will need to be cleaned frequently, weather keeping males of females as urine has a strong odor. They usually urinate on the side of the cage, so you need to wash the entire cage, not just the bottom tray.

Also check for legalityPlease tell me the pros and cons on owning sugar gliders also known as flying squirrels. thanks?
Well, first off, sugar gliders aren't rodents. They're possums. Secondly, they're not known as flying squirrels - the two are completely different animals with completely different needs. I don't know about flying squirrel care, but I do know a pretty good deal about sugar glider care.

If you want a sugar glider at all, it's important to get at least two. They're very social animals, and in the wild, they live in large colonies. Lone gliders may self mutilate themselves, dehydrate themselves, or starve themselves to death due to depression from being alone. There are people who have had single gliders successfully, but there are too many horror stories for me to even recommend owning ONE glider. A lot of people say that they spend a ton of time with their single glider, but think about it this way - you can't groom your glider like they can groom each other. You can't snuggle with them in the pouch. You can't run on the wheel with them. Spending every minute of every day with a glider can't compare to having another glider.

They're definitely not cheap pets. A good sized, glider suitable cage can be anywhere from $100 - $500. If you buy from vendors (people who make the items), a bonding pouch typically runs at about $15, sleeping pouches are about $10, and vines, hammocks, bridges, toys, etc. could cost over $80, for a large, high quality cage set. A good wheel, such as a stealth wheel, costs about $60 (with shipping). Some use wodent wheels, but they are NOT SAFE. Many gliders have been killed or seriously injured in these wheels, mostly due to the center bar. Even with the guard, glider tails can get wrapped around it and seriously injure them. As for food - the cost depends on the diet you feed. I fed BML (Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters) for over 2 years, and I recently switched to HPW (High Protein Wombaroo). Overall, the HPW is cheaper. 250 grams of wombaroo powder is about $20 with shipping and I'm expecting it to last for about a year for my three gliders. The ingredients are minimal - the wombaroo powder, honey, bee pollen, and water. Plus, the diet calls for 1.5 teaspoons per glider, whereas the BML called for 1 tablespoon per glider - so I don't use as much of the HPW as I did BML. However, with the HPW, you have to do some math with the calcium:phosphorous ratios. Sugar gliders need a 2:1 Ca:P ratio, and HPW has a 1.29:1 ratio, so you have to get fruits and veggies high in calcium, such as papaya and bok choy. BML is very simple - everything is laid out right in front of you. BML was fairly expensive - I spent over $40 for the first batch. One batch lasts two gliders about a month. I doubled it so it would last longer. Every month, I had to buy the baby food and juice, so that part was inexpensive. It's just expensive initially. Just do some research with that part. As for mealworms, I get mine from Wal-Mart, and it's $2 for a 40 count. There's normally 2-5 dead ones. I go through approximately 2 of those every week. Each of my gliders get 3 every night. Sometimes I offer them as treats and they get more. Vets are quite expensive. First you have to find one that specializes in exotics, sugar gliders in particular, and that alone raises the cost. Then, for a standard check up, they need to do a general checkup, then a urinalysis, and a fecal float/smear. At my vet, that's about $60 per glider. Some vets pay more, some pay less. It depends on the vet. KEEP A VET FUND. It's not unheard of for people to spend several thousand dollars in less than a week on their sugar gliders' emergency.

The cost of the gliders themselves vary upon where you get them, the color, etc. Standards can cost anywhere from $50 - $200, whereas the rare colors, such as albino, can cost up to $10,000. Creaminos (t+ albino) and platinums average around $5,000, mosaics (a glider with unusual patches of white) can be anywhere from $1,000 - $4,000 depending on the amount of white they have, white faces (bar missing from under the ear) can be anywhere from $250 - $500 depending on the generation, and leucistics (pure white with black eyes) average at $1,200. If you're getting a sugar glider from out of state, shipping is normally around $200.

Shipping sugar gliders is safe IF done correctly. Many breeders are picky when they ship, and will only ship in moderate temperatures. Most will NOT ship if it's too cold or too hot. Sugar gliders arrive at their destination the same day they are sent out. I got one of my sugar gliders shipped to me (in Arizona) from Tennessee.

The minimum cage size for two sugar gliders is 24x24x36 inches. Bar spacing shouldn't be larger than 1/2 inch. As a general rule for cage size, bigger is almost ALWAYS better!

Sugar gliders are nocturnal, meaning they're active at night. They're also very vocal and most of their vocalizations are pretty loud. Put 2 and 2 together - get an animal that's really loud throughout the night. Some people who are light sleepers can't handle their noise, and g

Do sugar gliders get along with flying squirrels?

Ive had a sugar glider for a while n I just got a flying squirrel. Their both guys, can I put them in the same cage?Do sugar gliders get along with flying squirrels?
You cannot put them in the same cage. The first issue is diet. Flying squirrels require a much different diet than a glider. The second issue is the fact that gliders are omnivores and will kill smaller animals.

In the wild gliders will eat small birds, lizards and other mammals. Your glider will kill the squirrel and eat him.

Different species of animal should not be housed together.

    Whats a flying squirrel?

    It's a squirrel that flies.

(Or, I could have said ';a furry little mammal having a bushy tail, fond of nuts, goes by the name 'Rocky', best friend Bullwinkle, and hails from Frostbite Falls, Minnesota.'; But I won't.)

A squirrel is a small or medium-sized rodent of the family Sciuridae. In the English-speaking world, it commonly refers to members of this family's genera Sciurus and Tamiasciurus, which are tree squirrels that have large bushy tails, and are indigenous to Europe, Asia and the Americas. Similar genera are found in Africa.

The Sciuridae family also include flying squirrels, as well as ground squirrels such as the chipmunks, prairie dogs, and woodchucks. Members of the unrelated family Anomaluridae are sometimes misleadingly referred to as ';scaly-tailed flying squirrels';.

  • Sugar Glider or Flying Squirrel?

I was looking at some animals to get as pets and i found the sugar glider, then I found an animal that seamed to be almost the same, the flying squirrel.

Can someone list the pros and cons of each, size and dietSugar Glider or Flying Squirrel?
get a sugar glider, theyr nicer than flying squirrels! flying squirrles bite, and sugar gliders dont.Sugar Glider or Flying Squirrel?
Ok the whole sugar gliders don't bite and only eat fruit is crap. I've done EXTENSIVE research on sugar gliders(I also am the proud owner of one little fuzzbutt named macie)! Sugar gliders are a marsupial native to australia and are omnivores!!! That means the gliders eat fruit veggies AND meats. Macies favorite fruit is apples and her favorite meat is boiled chicken. They love all meats but they can't have pork for some reason(its to complicated to get into.) As for flying squirrls I can't say because I don't know much about them. But be warned sugar gliders are great pets but they are a lot of work! If you have ANY questions at all abot sugar gliders feel free to contact me.! Hope that helps
Here is an article comparing the two as pets. It seems to favor the flying squirrel (no musky odor, easier to feed, doesn't need as much attention as a sugar glider)
Sugar gliders are the worlds smallest Marsupial ( i can't spell Lol) Sugar gliders also only eat fruits and are not native to america

Squirrle Hibernate, Sugar Gliders don't. Squirrles eat nuts Lol and so there Are a lot of differnces.
sugar gliders smell and are VERY sensitive to water

they are extremely cute, and often very loving.

flying squirrels sometimes are a bit less affectionate.

but their smell isnt quite as strong.

Anyone out there have any pet flying squirrels?

By 'pet' I do not mean captive squirrels but ones that you can let out of the cage and play with.Naturaly enough squirrels can ever be let outside or they will escape.Anyone out there have any pet flying squirrels?
I had a neighbor who had one and it was kinda weird but once you got used to it, it was pretty fun! Now I wouldnt recomend one as a pet cause they do tear things up and are still wild animals. People like to think that because an animal lives inside that its now domesticated... not true! Flying squirrels are NOT domesticated by any means. They can be trained to deal with that situation but can never be fully domesticated like a dog or cat.

Also, the dude who owned this squirrel told me, ';NEVER own any other animal bigger than the squirrel cause it will NEVER want to come out and could starve itself from fear.'; Its someting to do with it being affraid it will be eaten and not to mention from my experience with dogs and such, im sure the other animal would think of it as a toy hahaAnyone out there have any pet flying squirrels?
yea...... but he's really a sugar glider but theyre pretty much the same......

his names stitch and he is really pretty an SOFT!!!!
they are called sugar gliders not flying squirrels

endo (greek from in or going into) therm (greek for heat) is an animal that absorbs heat from outside itself - like a snake or lizard absorbing the sun's warmth. These creatures are dependent on external sources of heat and so are sluggish and slow when none is around. Exo (From greek out or giving out) therm (heat) is a mammal, a furry critter that generates its own heat within it and radiates heat out (it feels warm when you pick it up). These animals (such as us and flying squirrels can always move quickly cause they generate their own heat like a little radiating fire inside them.Is the flying squirrel an endotherm? Warm-blooded animals maintain thermal homeostasis; which is keeping your body temperature at a constant level. This involves the ability to cool down or produce more body heat. Warm-blooded animals mainly control their body temperature by regulating their metabolic rates (e.g. increasing their metabolic rate as the surrounding temperature begins to decrease).

Both the terms ';warm-blooded'; and ';cold-blooded'; have fallen out of favor with scientists, because of the vagueness of the terms, and due to an increased understanding in this field. Body temperature types do not fall into simple either/or categories. Each term may be replaced with one or more variants (see: Definitions of warm-bloodedness). Body temperature maintenance incorporates a wide range of different techniques that result in a body temperature continuum, with the traditional ideals of warm-blooded and cold-blooded being at opposite ends of the spectrum.

    So yes
endo=inside....therm=temperature (or homeotherm=same body temp), so it literally means making heat from inside.....or warm blooded. THese are things which maintain a constant body temp to enable them to maintain active at all temps and times of the day/year (well mostly active)

Cold blooded things or poikeotherms use the external conditions to warm up the body and enable activity..as snakes etc are sluggish in cold conditions, but once warmed up are pretty active.

Basically homoetherms need more energy to keep their body temps at this higher and more constant temp than poikeotherms, but are able to live in areas that poikeotherms cannot eg in New Zealand we don;t have any snakes because its too cold (well thats part of the situation) here for them compared to Australia.
