Flying squirrels are nocturnal. Although they are very plentiful, they are seldom seen. I have had 2 as pets and they calm down and tame easily. A small havahart trap baited with peanuts [with shells on] placed off the ground about 5 or 6 feet works. The best place is in a stand of oaks, hickory or beech trees. The trap has to be well secured to a limb as the flying squirrel is a favorite meal to owls. How can I catch a flying squirrel?
I use the smallest Havahart type trap or a live catch rat trap I get from the Vietnamese store

With the havahart I throw peanuts all around the are I set the trap in and smear the trigger plate with peanut butter and toss some peanuts in

The squirrels are typically too light to set off the trigger using the peanut butter forces them to engage the trigger plate

With the Viet trap there is a plastic ball that hangs down from the top of the trap that triggers the door when disengaged

I fill that ball up with peanut butter

Or if the customer wants them gone in a hurry I just place rat snap traps baited with peanut butter out
you really should not catch one from the wild. if you are hoping to own one as a pet, you should read up on them first, and make sure you are ready for that commitment (potentially 10-15 years, and hours and hours of work). a wild caught flyer will not be the same as one captive bred. he/she will likely be very aggressive, and their bite is not pleasant. if you really want a flyer as a pet, the wild is the last place to get one. firstly, it's illegal. secondly, you won't get a good pet. look for a breeder instead. please don't bother the wild animal.
if your looking for it alive, use a long box trap. twice the length of the animal, either on the ground or in a tree, use something you know they eat, this will help:

if your looking for it dead, use a rat trap nailed to the tree upside down,

it's harder for them to dodge while upside down.
Flying squirrels are nocturnal and so you have to catch them during the day..Find a tree that one lives in , usually there's a hole some where near the top of the tree....either crawl up there and use a coat hanger to snag him out or...cut the tree down and get him this way!
You should NEVER catch one, but if you have to have one then simply tear your pillow apart glue the feathers to your arms and start flapping and make quacking sounds, they hate that!
you can't. they are protected by law. so lay off the flying squirrels already.
Get a moose. Make a TV show. Then take him out while he's in the dressing room.
Practice up on your skeet and trap shooting skills. They are pretty quick little fellas!
