Does anyone know the name of the anime about flying squirrels?

I remember it from when I was a kid... so It is probably from like the 80s... It was about flying squirrels or chipmunks or something to that effect. The movie starts with one of them escaping from his cage %26amp;owner to find a secret forest, I remember in the movie it helps another squirell escape from a zoo, this squirrels name was ';no no'; .. very vague details sorry it only select peices I remember. I remember a scene where they fight a fox and in the ending they come to find the ';secret forest.'; I figure someone out there might have remembered seeing this... any guesses?Does anyone know the name of the anime about flying squirrels?

So, I have a question about land preservation and flying squirrels?

Ok, so a close friend's grandparents owned all this land, which was eventually taken by eminent domain by the government for 10 cents an acre and turned into a ski resort.(Not a very governmental use, right?) This was many years ago, mind you. I love living in the county, and having a place to my self where there are no cars or phone lines, and te idea that someone could just take that away terrifies me.

So my question is this: Last time I checked, flying squirrels were under protection. So, I know for a fact there are such animals where I live, as I've found two of them dead. So, if it ever becomes an issue, can I bring that up as an argument against them taking it over? So, I have a question about land preservation and flying squirrels?
Not really. They can still take over the land to turn into a natural habitat, like a wildlife reserve. Now, this doesn't mean they'll turn it into a ski resort or anything like that. It would still be as pristine as it is now, you just wouldn't be able to go there like before. But, most likely, they would probably just list those little critters as an endangered species, restricting the destruction of that habitat but still allowing people to peruse around the area. So, that land stays regardless. Bring it up; it's viable as an argument IF they really are endangered.

Yay for the squirrels. So, I have a question about land preservation and flying squirrels?
Not sure about the squirrels but the law is that they have to give you fair market value for the land. You may even be able to argue that the land value is higher because a skiing environment generates tourism and thus increases the land value. If they had developed the land next to yours, you land value would have gone up. Therefore you should be able to argue that you should get that increased value.

Just a thought.
you have hit on another lie that the left uses to have control over people ...the endangered species act is often used to seize private property. i have flying squirrels in my back yard, and so do you, they are nocturnal so most people don't even know they are there, but they are widespread and not endangered...theoretically the government could seize my home or anyones to ';protect'; the environment. environmentalism and global warming are just the latest tools the democrats and other leftists use to enslave people.
There is plenty of flying squirrels around. I`ve seen more than my share. The good old days when logging was needed for building your home!
I know in Australia if the government wanted your land for an environmental reason they would have to make an offer and it would depend on you agreeing to that price or not, they can under law seize land from you because of what species you have on your land.

The Endangered Species Act 1973 says:

Land Acquisition (ESA 搂 5). The Secretary, and the Secretary of Agriculture with respect to the National Forest System, must establish and implement a program to conserve fish, wildlife and plants, including those listed. To carry out the program, the appropriate Secretary is to use land acquisition and other authority under the Fish and Wildlife Act of 1956, the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act and the Migratory Bird Conservation Act. The Secretary is also authorized to acquire, by purchase, donation or otherwise, lands, waters or interests therein. Funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 may be used for acquisitions.

So I would suggest that the Government can acquire your land without you having much say if they deem necessary. Suppose it depends on how much the government wants to pee people off ... I would suggest if the government decides to acquire your land cheaply then protest and make your voice heard ... because Governments are there to reflect the public opinion, people power can make a difference.

Please Help. Where can i buy baby Southern flying Squirrels in Dallas Texas???

I live around Dallas Texas and I am thinking about getting a flying squirrel. If anybody breeds them or knows a breeder please let me know. And if at all possible im looking for them cheap.

And DONT post things saying that they are wild and shouldnt be kept as pets because they are legally bred to be pets.

Thanks for the helpPlease Help. Where can i buy baby Southern flying Squirrels in Dallas Texas???
I know they're legally bred to be pets, but different states have different laws. Just make sure you can have one in Texas. As far as where to get one, I have no idea. Sorry. :(

Actually, I never said anything about them being wild animals that shouldn't be kept as pets. I even recognized them being legally bred. Pardon me for not knowing the laws for pet flying squirrels in all 50 states or what you happen to know of them.

Exotic pet store in CT that sells baby flying squirrels?

I've wanted a pet squirrel for awhile, i heard they were vicious, but i heard that flying squirrels are generally friendly, i wanted to get one, i need the supplies and the animal itself, i don't want to scare it so i don't want to ship, and i couldn't find a store online in ct, or a breeder, if you can help that would be great, thanksExotic pet store in CT that sells baby flying squirrels?
It is illegal to own a Flying Squirrel in Connecticut.

Further, there are no breeders in the New England Area.

The few breeders that are in the USA will not sell their animals to people who live in other states where it is illegal...so no one will sell you an animal because you live in CT.

Sugar Gliders are very similar to a flying squirrel and they are legal in CT.Exotic pet store in CT that sells baby flying squirrels?

Where do Flying Squirrels go for warmth during the winter?

In my house we have a brick chimney that is kinda in the center of my house butyou can't see it with the walls and stuff, but anyways, there was a small space that was never sealed in between the chimney adn wood or something and in the winter flying squirrels started coming into our attic looking for warmth and then my mom wanted get rid of them so we put these have a heart traps up there and we caught two but they were dead =( then I had the idea to put a small cloth so they could burrow and sleep and it was alive! We caught 6 more by the time winter ended! THroguh the summer we had no squirrels at all!

Now the squirrels have recently started coming back into our house and we've already caught and released 4 of them and then we filled the space with foam but they chewed right threw it and we'll be catching more...my mom doesn't even care and she just wants them out of there...so where will they go for warmth if they can't get into a house?Where do Flying Squirrels go for warmth during the winter?
Anywhere they can. Usually in the wild this means they'll take up communal nesting in a tree cavity. I'd venture that since you have flying squirrels you also have good habitat for them nearby, so they should be fine outside.

If your mom is really set on keeping them out, you'll need to use something like cement or metal, as they will be able to chew wood, foam and other softer materials.Where do Flying Squirrels go for warmth during the winter?
Why not contact Project Wildlife for their suggestions to solve your problem with the squirrels?

Are southern flying squirrels legal as pets in Florida?

i've read about southern flying squirrels and now i really want one! but there are two problems: #1, i don't know if they are legal as pets in florida. #2: one of my 3 dogs doesn't like small animals so if i get a southern flyer, she will kill it. WHAT DO I DO???!!!!Are southern flying squirrels legal as pets in Florida?
1 Flordia Fish and Wildlife classifies squirrels as wildlife not requiring a permit.

    Wildlife Not Requiring a Permit

The following species do not require a permit for personal possession as long as no other Rule or Statute applies. Examples include, but are not limited to, rules for Threatened or Endangered Species:

    9. Squirrels; chipmunks

#2 Keep your squirrel in a room the dogs do not have access to and only let the squirrel out of that room when the dogs are confined to another room. Are southern flying squirrels legal as pets in Florida?
Don't know about them being legal or not. But if you think one of your dog's would kill it, i would not put myself through that loss.
Kill the policeman, kill the dog.
    yes, it's legal
    DONT BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do southern flying squirrels make good relatively easy pets?

I used to have a typical squirrel as a pet, originally I rescued him from my backyard after being covered in blood from a cat. I successfully nursed him back to health and he was the best pet I've ever had. Following me around the house, very sociable, and loving. Although I had special permission to legally keep him as a pet, when he got older, I let him live the normal life of a squirrel. Someone told me about this species called a southern flying squirrel, and I'm curious what there like, but I wanted to hear it from people who have raised them previously. thank youDo southern flying squirrels make good relatively easy pets?
Well, depends on what you think is easy.

You should join the Southern Flying Squirrel forums, which are here and a few other places:

    http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/forums/i鈥?/a>

They need a large cage, one you can bring outside and hose down every month (they cling to the side a pee). It doesn't squirt out it just goes on the bars.

They get into small holes so prepare to have your subwoofer and speakers infiltrated. They have to be bought as babies, and bonded with, and even then you aren't guaranteed a sociable squirrel.

They do need to be neutered (about $160) and finding a vet that will do this is not fun. That is only if you want to have boys and girls together.

They can be very nice to people, but like I said, some aren't. I had three, and two were very non-friendly and did not like attention. They were all from the same breeder. I raised them all from the same age. The first one was awesome and went everywhere with me in my shirt, and loved everyone. The others, not so much. Kind of nervous.

It's kind of a guessing game as to if you will get one that is nice...but if you do, they are fun. They need time out to explore every night, and a safe house to do so in. No mirrors or glass - they will fly into it. You also have to teach them where to land on you (no faces! That hurts!)

All in all, they live 15 years in captivity if you give them the proper diet. They need a calcium/phosphorus supplement in the right ratio, ask on the forums. They are good little pets, but require you to cater to them as far as diet and excerise (and houseproofing) goes.

I was never bit by any of my squirrels. Never. The only time I was pinched was by Bear when I pushed him to go into a tree. He didn't want to, and he told me by pretending to bite me (pinching) and saying ';eep!'; which is squirrel talk for ';No way!!!';Do southern flying squirrels make good relatively easy pets?
    Squirrels, are not domesticated animals,

    Thus. They are not pets.

Its really nice you saved a Squirrel. but they belong free in the wild. Its where they belong, and where they are happy at.

Squirrels shouldn't be kept in cages, or inside the house.

No matter what kind of Squirrel, Its not right to keep them.
i used to have one they bite a lot!

Southern Flying squirrels as pets ...?

I'm doing research on possably getting a southern flying squirrel for a pet. I originally wanted to get a pair of sugar gliders but they are illegal to own in my state, and southern flying squirrels are legal.

Does anyone else have them for pets? How loud are they? I live in an apartment that doesn't allow louds pets (so no cats, dogs, birds...) and I need to make sure before I get one that they arn't loud enough to annoy the other ppl in the building.

Also, does anyone know of any breeders in MA? They are perfectly legal here, but I haven't been able to find anywhere in this state that breeds them.

Any other information or tips from ppl who already own them would be great :) Thanks!Southern Flying squirrels as pets ...?

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Does anyone know whare to get CHEEAAP southern flying squirrels or CHEEAAP sugar gliders in OHIO??????????
I can't give you specifics for your area, but I live down south and I have two gliders. They're the greatest things, but require some work...

The best way to find sugar gliders at a lower price is to look around in the classifieds of the newspaper. There's usually some in there, whether they be unwanted baby gliders or older ones who were more work than their owners expected. Older ones will usually be cheaper.

It may not be quick (depending on where you live) but if you wait long enough, there'll be something.Does anyone know whare to get CHEEAAP southern flying squirrels or CHEEAAP sugar gliders in OHIO??????????
Cheap ones generally aren't all that healthy, and they'll end up costing you more in the long run with vet visits.
Research gliders before you get one, there's a lot you need to know to take care of them-such as diet and living conditions they need, also DON'T get one if you own a cat, cats will eat them. And you will need to be neurotic about the laundry, they like to hide in socks and get washed (making it an ex-sugar glider).

Is there scientific evidence that flying- foxes evolved from squirrels or does it just appear that way?

    Very good question.

I don't know if they have done DNA analysis yet but they should. I've always wondered about it. They just seem too different from other Bats. Don't know about squirrels but it's a good enough guess to get us started.

Afterall everyone thought Hyenas were Dogs (except me) till DNA came along and proved them to be more closely related to Civet Cats.Is there scientific evidence that flying- foxes evolved from squirrels or does it just appear that way?
A flying fox is actually a bat with a fox-like snout. This form of evolution is called convergent evolution. Flying foxes did not evolve from squirrels, what happened was that they developed similar physical characteristics as the environemental pressures that they experienced were similar.

    Squirrels glide not fly.
    Ask Rocky
Technically they don't fly, they glide.
they fly from tree to tree

they fly like 40 mphs a hour

to escape snakes and animals that are danergous to them is why they fly

    Can flying squirrels really fly?

actually they jump and glide through the air by using flaps of skin under their arms to catch air. they can only do it over short distances, like from one tree to another. Can flying squirrels really fly?
No they can't really fly. These membranes go from wrist to ankle, and along the flanks of there bodies. They have spurs of cartilage extending back from there wrists, help them spread there folds of skin. A flattened tail allows the squirrel to bank and and turn in mid-glide, and help them put them selves in the right direction of where they want to land. Can flying squirrels really fly?
No, I think that expression has got you fooled. They actually glide in the air to get to tree to tree, making it easier to get across instead of just having to go on the ground and climb all the way up in the tree. Sorry they had you fooled, hope this helped ya!

Are Sugar Gliders (Flying Squirrels) good pets...?

Do they need cages? If so, ad a link of one please.

Is there behavior good? Are Sugar Gliders (Flying Squirrels) good pets...?
YES they are GREAT pets, my wife has two. And they are NOT flying squirrels. Squirrels are rodents. Sugar gliders are marsupials; they have a pouch, like a kangaroo, and they have opposing thumbs on their claws, they are very cool and different animals. Kind of like a combination between a kangaroo, bat, and squirrel.

They are also called ';pocket pets'; or ';pocket buddies'; for a very good reason, see below. NOTE that they require a lot of working with and attention. If you don't want to give them attention on a semi-daily basis, sugar gliders are not for you.

    You will need a small sugar glider pouch, like a purse, the pet store will have them. Put them in the pouch and carry them with you whenever you can. Sometimes they will crawl out of the pouch and under your shirt, be sure to wear a T underneath as their claws are sharp. Sometimes when my wife is in line at a store, they will peek out . . . freaks people out but they love them! ';What the heck is THAT?';

Sometimes they will try to bite you to test you, you have to ';take the bite'; and let them know it doesn't intimidate you. After a while they'll only bite if they think it's a peanut.

Sometimes we play this game, we stand 12-15 feet apart and toss the sugar glider to the other person. They open their arms and glide to you . . they LOVE this as they don't get to glide much when domesticated.

One is fine, two is better, even the same sex, they will live happier and longer. We have two males, and both are neutered.

People often mis-feed sugar gliders. ';sugar'; is only what they do in the wild, use their long lower teeth to puncture fruit. The need LOTS of vegetables and protein (cooked grain cereal, eggs, tofu) and only give them a LITTLE fruit or insects. If you feed them only fruit and insects their coat gets matted and they become malnourished. A healthy S.G. will have a smooth coat, softer than even mink, and look a little on the chubby side.

We did this at first, thinking they wanted more fruit, and one of them got an impacted tooth, had to have it removed! Too much sugar is not good for sugar gliders.

For a cage, a small bird cage will do, especially if you take them with you every other day or so, but the bigger the better, see below. They need an exercise wheel, not a wire hamster one but one of the plastic ones with a flat running surface. You can glue abrasive pads inside the wheel to keep their claws from growing out too long. Do NOT use wood chips in the cage, they are not rodents. Wood chips are BAD for them - it puts splinters in their paws and they often eat it and this is not good. S.G.'s need no lining in their cage.

The bigger the cage the better. We built a ';corner cage'; that goes to the ceiling and is 6 feet wide, they like to get high in one corner and glide down to the pouch in the cage. The bigger the cage, the more exercise they get.

There are really only two ';bad'; things about them. They have a bit of a smell. :-) Not too bad, but cleaning their cage daily helps a lot.

The second bad thing about them is they are nocturnal. They will run in the wheel most of the night, and often spend several minutes barking in the middle of the night. Be ready for this, it's what they do, don't try to stop them - but it may interrupt your sleep! Are Sugar Gliders (Flying Squirrels) good pets...?
First of all, you need to realize that sugar gliders and flying squirrels come from totally different branches of the mammal class. Flying squirrels are rodents, and have behavior and needs similar to those of other squirrels, rabbits, or chinchillas.

Sugar gliders are marsupials, and they subsist on an omnivorous diet of smaller creatures and certain types of tree sap. Behaviorally, gliders are similar to ferrets. Curious, intelligent, and often deeply attached to humans in their family, they require (not ';should have';, REQUIRE) at least an hour or two of human contact daily in order to be truly tame and friendly.

Yes, they absolutely need cages when you aren't keeping a close eye on them. They're notorious for getting into trouble when left to their own devices.
Yes according to this website they do need a cage and a tall one is preferable :

    http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/squirrels鈥?/a>
they can be very good pets. but the onky thing about them, is that they require ALOT of attention. they have to be held and played with more than any other pet. sometimes they arent very good with children but how much attention they get has alot to do with it. and yes they do need cages. any kind of cage will work really but they need alot of toys in there so they can play.
Maybe when they get older they don't need 1 but if u get 1 when it is a baby u want a cage!

this is haaaardIt is known (only in my head, this a math question) that pygmy flying squirrels normally have a weight distrib
hi, i am in awe of you, you are so clever for even knowing this question, it just made my head hurt, have a nice dayIt is known (only in my head, this a math question) that pygmy flying squirrels normally have a weight distrib
Assuming the weight of the squirrles follow a normal distribution, you are looking for the cumulative normal distribution of the tail of the distribution (49-40)/3.5=2.571 standard deviations higher than the mean. You find this by subtracting the cumulative normal distribution of everything below 2.571 standard deviation about the mean from 1. You can look up the value for cumulative normal distribution at 2.571 standard deviation in a statistics handbook. If you have Excel, you can find it using the NORMDIST function. For your case, type in:

    =NORMDIST(49,40,3.5,1)

That gives you the value of the percentage of the population that weighs up to 49 grams. What you want is 1 minus that to get you the percentage of squirrels that are heavier than 49 grams. Multiply that percentage remaining by 4000, and you have your answer. In this case, it's 4000*0.005064=20.25 squirrels. Since squirrels can't be fractional unless you count roadkills and the question does say ';living';, I'd round that off to 20 little porky squirrels weight more than 49g living in the area.

Alternatively, you can use the fact that normal distribution is symmetric about the mean. The population of squirrels weighing more than 49 grams is the same as the population of squirrels less than 31 grams. So you can find the percentage directly by finding the population of squirrels weighing less than 31 grams instead of doing 1 minus the population of squirrels weighing up to 49 grams.

In this case, you will find:

    NORMDIST(31,40,3.5,1) will equal 1-NORMDIST(49,40,3.5,1)

Multiply that by 4000 to get your answer.
I'm fairly certain the answer is .03%, or 1 squirrel. I've had a TINY amount of experience with standard deviation, and by combining that with the information on Wikipedia I came up with the answer. I hope this helps, and if it doesn't I suggest that you post this in a mathematics section; zoology is a science, and you'll probably get more help by switching sections
It's 21. I answered on my Wajas account and got it correct.

I want to buy a flying squirrel, but i can't find anywere to purchase them. If i can't find a squirrel i would like to have a sugar glider. Does anyone know where i can find one of them in Texas?Flying Squirrels/ Sugar Gliders.?
I definately suggest sugars over squirrels. Sugar gliders are sooo affectionate. but they are expensive and needy. Having one is practically like having a baby.

You have to buy two at a time, and you have to bond with both every day for at least an hour. they are a lot of work, but they will love you so much and they're really cute.

look up a breeder in your state.Flying Squirrels/ Sugar Gliders.?
If you don't know how to get one.... then it is very likely that you don't know enough about them to be a responsible care giver. Do your research before buying a pet simply because it is unique and/or sounds like a cool pet!

your probably not going to be able to care for it properly
Sugar Gliders are cute and squirrel like but they are not SQUIRRELS they're a marsupial creature not a rodent. As for the question some flea markets have pets but they're usually birds or rodents do some research and find a breeder for it. From what I understand there are several breeders for gliders in Florida try them they may be able to point you in the right direction

    Sugar glider or flying Squirrels?

i have been reading up on sugar gliders for the past months and i have learned a great deal of info on them.........but i have just heard of a flying squirrel and i was told that they have no odor and do not require fresh food on the regular basis i am also 15 so please give me your opinon on which one would be right for meSugar glider or flying Squirrels?
I have a sugar glider and yes they are very cute, but oh so hard to care of. You have to give them fresh food, in just the right proportions every night. I would do a lot of research on the flying squirrel first. Don't get me wrong, I love my little Peaches, and she is a sweetiepie, its just that they require such diligence in their care and they may live upwards of 13 years, so you may want to keep that in mind. Good luck with your decision!Sugar glider or flying Squirrels?
I have had both. The flying squirrel was much harder to care for. There are no comercial squirrel diets. Nuts are expensive, so you won't save any $$$. All animals require fresh food and water.

I'd say neither are good pets for a 15 year old. Both are long lived. Are you going to college? What are you going to do with these animals? They are both high maintanance and expensive to keep and care for.
Flying squirrels are wild animals and not domesticated like the sugar glider. They tend to be grouchy and bite a lot. They are nocturnal, so they sleep all day in a box and only come out at night.
well i would say sugar glider because my cousin has one and they are so cute. but i dont really know much about them so im sorry that i might not be able to properly answer your question.

yes try to catch one and see what you get
any animal can bite or scratch, they will bite first, cats do the scratching, i had a flying squirrel, and their are really sweet if you handle them plenty, their fast, so watch. just dont startel them when their sleeping, they will tend to nip.
they bite if the object is bigger than them and scratch if it's smaller.
YES, AND YES. Please, do not get an exotic pet until you have truly researched them, made sure that you have access to a vet that is familiar with them, and you have spoken with the local/state group that has dedicated themselves to rescuing unwanted Flyers.

If after you have done all this, please consider adopting an unwanted flyer, rather then patronizing a breeder who sells for money, not caring if the buyer has the right information on caring for them, or a decent vet that they can actually afford to go to.

Exotics rarely last 12 months - either they die through neglect and ignorance or they get dumped at a rescue.

Can you let chinchillas, flying squirrels, sugar gliders around each other on put them in same cage 2gether?

can you let chinchillas and flying squirrels, sugar gliders around each other on put them in same cage 2getherCan you let chinchillas, flying squirrels, sugar gliders around each other on put them in same cage 2gether?
If when you say around you mean same room, yes. Same cage absolutely not. They will fight and could possibly catch a disease from the others feces. Yes, that's what I said. Chins like to eat their own poop so they would probably not object to eating other species' feces.

Chinchillas also have very delicate digestive systems so putting them with other species who eat fresh veggies, meat, mealworms, nuts etc etc will be signing their death certificate. Chins are only to eat pellets and hay not anything else on a daily basis. The occassional cheerio, shredded wheat (both nonfrosted), or rose hips as a treat.

Hope this helps! Can you let chinchillas, flying squirrels, sugar gliders around each other on put them in same cage 2gether?
i dont know about all of them, but i wouldnt if i were you, i have a male chinchilla and a female guinea pig and i put the female guine pig in the same cage with my chinchilla so that there would be more room for my guine pig and my chinchilla likes her, they eat together and touch noses..lol

my chinchilla dont like nothing coming in his cage lol because when the kitten goes in his cage he gets pissed and will jump down to the bottom of his cage and chase the kitten out or bite it..

but no i wouldnt put them all in the same cage together because sugar gliders are real fragile, and chinchillas will bite something in its cage it dont like, and the squirells will just get hurt because all of those animals together will just make the squirrels want to try to get out and they will just injure them selves.

    i hope i helped!! =)
i would do it just to see what would happen.

Flying squirrels are squirrels that have skin going from their arms to their legs like wings. They use these to glide from tree to tree.
and developed a need for speed
uhh... no.. lol good try tho...
No, they have extra skin between legs on sides.
Flying squirrels are adapted to glide through the air, by having a flap of skin which is tucked away except when traveling through the trees, and landing on unsuspecting Muffinmen.

Seriously, we have Flying Squirrels in Missouri. I've lived here 26 years but just found out about them several years ago. Flying Squirrels are nocturnal.

Thanks for thought to ponder for the evening!! LOL
The extra skin, and the aerodynamics dont lie.
No ,they are not the same. Flying squirrels have a web of skin at their front legs to the body to glide to different trees or to escape danger.
    They're Super Squirrels
No... when they jump and spread their from and back legs they flatten out and almost look like flat frisbee

Completely different type of squirrel. They have extra skin between both sides of their body. Between each of their feet. The get up high and glide across a clearing.
When and doubt, look it up on Wikipedia!

    ';The term ';flying'; is somewhat misleading, since flying squirrels are actually gliders incapable of true flight. Gliding is achieved by this animal by launching off the tops of trees and extending flaps of skin stretched from arms to legs: once they have launched themselves into the air they are highly maneuverable while in flight. Steering is accomplished by adjusting tautness of the patagium, largely controlled by a small cartilaginous wrist bone. The tail acts as a stabilizer in flight, much like the tail of a kite, and as an adjunct airfoil when ';braking'; prior to landing on a tree trunk.';

Whether or not it's legal or not I can't say but if they are young enough to not have their eyes open feed Goat milk (cow milk will starve them to death) every three or four hours, handle them frequently and keep them on a heating pad with towels n the bottom so they can crawl around and adjust themselves to the right temperature. As they grow up be careful how you handle them and never, never grasp one tight enough to restrain it. Cup it in your hands and move it where you want it and release. Remember always there is no such thing as a pet squirrel only another wild squirrel who has lost the natural fear of human beings and should be treated as such.Any time you grasp a squirrel tightly you will instantly be bitten by it. Will piney squirrels and flying squirrels get along together?

HELL no they will beat the **** out of eachother

    jk yea prolly

How are flying squirrels different from the sugar gliders. thanks?

'; * Flying squirrels are placental mammals. Placental mammals spend a long time developing inside the mother's body being nourished by a placenta before they are born.

    * Sugar gliders are marsupial mammals, like kangaroos. Marsupial mammals may only spend a short time developing inside the mother's body and are very tiny when born. After birth, a baby marsupial crawls into its mother's pouch and is nourished by her milk as it continues to grow and develop.

    Flying squirrels and sugar gliders are only distantly related. So why do they look so similar then? Their gliding ';wings'; and big eyes are analogous structures. Natural selection independently adapted both lineages for similar lifestyles: leaping from treetops (hence, the gliding ';wings';) and foraging at night (hence, the big eyes).';

First off, get your facts right. You CANNOT buy an individual flying squirrel, they will die of loneliness. The person who said they are illegal to own is incorrect, because guess what I have two of my own! OK, these are NOT SUGAR GLIDERS! I have two sugar gliders also, and yes I give them all my attention 6 hours a day. You need to understand the work these are. They can run you $600 startup cost (mine was $800) which includes the price of your squirrels. You need to pay about $50 in fresh fruit, vitamins, and more. These are not dogs, they are not cats, therefore you need to pay bout 4 hours attention a day (oh yeah, they are nocturnal so you need to stay up from about 11p.m. to 2a.m. each night) . No joke. And don't give me the , ';i want a girl'; crap. You should be happy for any gender. You can get the males fixed, but it is about $200 surgery each one. These are expenisive animals. Also, the always wonderful vet bills can run you into the thousands each year. Here is some links----

Flying squirrels are illegal to have as pets without a captive wildlife permit.

I believe you are talking about a sugar glider.

Sugar gliders usually run around $300-500 each, at least in my area, and do better in pairs. I have not heard of anyone getting their glider fixed, it would probably be very difficult since they are small, and marsupials. You cannot breed sugar gliders legally in the US without a federal breeders permit (at least as of 2 years ago), so no breeder should sell you a male and female pair. However, the rule isn't enforced well, and a lot of backyard people are breeding sugar gliders illegally. Any legal breeder you go to should be able to show you their permit.

Most sugar gliders you find will be male, I have only seen 1 female and 15 or so males as pets.

As for places to get them? Larger exotic pet stores sell them, or look up sugar glider and your state, and you should be able to find a breeder.

They are nocturnal, so you do not want the cage in your room- they will sleep all day and wake up at night. They are quite active and love jumping around, which makes a lot of noise. They require a sugar glider dry diet, mixed with fruits, veggies, insects, and nectar/juices.

they dont actually fly they glide with a small peice of skin between their legs ( like webed feet )
they dont fly. They jump from tree branch to tree branch. They can glide using flaps of skin under their legs. Sort of like a kite.
with their wings that no - one can scientifically see - i know its magic!!!!

they also have to wear a helmet and a jacket but you can't see them either it is really cool and MAGIC!
They have a thin layer of skin stretching from their front paw to their back and when they jump off something the stretch out their paws and glide.

sorta like a kite or a parachute.

Sugar gliders vs. Southern Flying Squirrels?

Hello, I am considering getting either one of these. Which do you recommend? What are the pros and cons of each. Any info. you can give me would be helpful. Thanks!Sugar gliders vs. Southern Flying Squirrels?
I have had both, while they are similar in some aspects they are also very different.

SG and SFS both have a very specific diet that must be followed to a tee. There cannot be any deviation in a SG diet. Both are quite expensive to feel properly. The SFS will need fresh nuts and seed(which are expensive), and the SF will need fresh fruits and veggies daily, as well as a protein source. There are about a dozen glider diets to look through and decided which one suits you best(but be sure not to mix and match, they must be followed exactly).

When I had my SFS it was hard to get adequate info on feeding and care. Their diet is going to be more nut based. They tend to be quieter than SG(since SG crab and bark). I did enjoy my SFS, but the fact that I could not find a lot of info made it hard to know I was caring for him properly.

SG are delicate and as I mentioned before have very specific dietary needs. Here is some info on glider care:

Sugar gliders are very high maintenance pets. They are expensive to purchase and even more money to keep. They range from $150 and up, depending on colors. The start up cost(cage, gliders, toys, etc) will be around $1000-$1500

    Temperament:

Sugar gliders are extremely active and very social animals and do not like to live alone. If you would like to own a sugar glider, plan on having more than one. A lonely sugar glider who is deprived of social interaction, will not thrive. They will become depressed and lonely, which can cause them to die. They need interaction with their owners to be happy.

Remember that they are nocturnal and are up all night and sleep all day. My gliders used to wake up at about 11pm and were up until about 7am. During the day they didn't like being bothered, imagine someone wanting you to get up and play at 3 in the morning. I am an insomniac and was up all night anyway, so I didn't mind. When I did want to sleep it was difficult, they are very noisy at night, jumping around and barking and chirping. I used to get woken up several times.

Gliders should be purchased when they are young. Older gliders are hard to tame and may never enjoy being with you.

    Bonding

Gliders must be able to be carried by you during the day in order to bond. I was lucky enough to have a job that didn't mind that I had them with me. You cannot sneak them around with you, as occasionally they will crab, or bark. They are loud barkers.

It you are not able to carry them for at least a few your a day in a bonding pouch then they may not take to you.

Even as a bonded pet, they are still not cuddly. A friendly glider is pretty much one that will not bite you and will jump from the cage to you. You're pretty much a bridge for them to get to where they really want :) They do not like being pet or held, I used to just have them jump from the cage to me and back.

    Feeding

The feeding requirements of a sugar glider are somewhat controversial. It is only recently they have been kept as pets, and needs are somewhat of a mystery. As time goes on people will learn more about the needs of these little creatures. Sugar gliders are omnivorous, meaning they will eat plant material and meat. In the wild they feed from nectar, fruit, insects and even small birds, eggs or rodents. This diet is pretty hard to replicate in captivity. People feed them a variety of foods trying to mimic their natural diet as best they can. Some people feed insects such as crickets, mealworms, waxworms, moths and spiders. The insects should be fed high quality food such as commercial cricket food, and dusted with a complete vitamin/mineral supplement. Hence their name, the sugar glider loves the taste of sugar. They like fruit cocktail. The fruit should be fed in small amounts, chopped together so the gliders can not just pick out their favorites. There are many different diets that can be fed. These diets cannot be mixed and match and must be fed according to directions. Incorrect diet can cause serious health issues. Some diets you may want to research

BML, Taronga Zoo Diet, Chicago Zoological Park Alternative Diet , Darcy's Sugar Glider Diet , Elwin's Fresh Food Diet, Priscilla Price's Sugar Glider Diet, Suncoast Glider Diet Plan, etc(there are a few more to this list)

    Cage:

A large cage, the bigger the better, should be provided with plenty of things to jump and leap off of (a minimum of 24 x 24 inches, by 36 inches high). For a sugar glider, height is more valuable than floor space. A wire cage, wire should be no more than 陆 inch wide, is best to allow the cage to breathe. A plastic tub can be placed under the cage to catch any debris that may fall out of the cage. Lots of toys should be provided as well as an exercise wheel, nest box and/or glider pouch. Branches, ropes and ladders will provide lots of opportunity for climbing and exercise. Large cage is a must, if you do not have the space or $$$ to buy an apropriate cage then do not get a glider.

    Vet care

Since gliders are exotic their veterinary care will cost more. You will need to find a sugar glider knowledgeable vet before you purchase a glider.

    Other info

Male sugar gliders have a unique smell that some people find unbearable. I used to have to clean mine daily(scrubbing cage, washing bedding, cleaning toys) to keep the smell down. The males have scent glands and they mark thier territory. Females do not have as bad a smell as males. The cage will need to be cleaned frequently, weather keeping males of females as urine has a strong odor. They usually urinate on the side of the cage, so you need to wash the entire cage, not just the bottom tray.

Also check for legality in your state. Gliders and SFS are illegal in some states and cities.

Please do as much research as possible on these guys. They are not easy to keep and both require very specific care in order to thrive and be healthy.

Only at airports.Do flying squirrels need FAA approval before take off?
They actually do. They've developed way to radio the FAA because there was a secret genocide of flying squirrels that weren't calling their flights in.Do flying squirrels need FAA approval before take off?
Flying Squirrels must follow all FAA regulations which unfortunately targets squirrels who look suspicious and are therefore on a no-fly list
Canadian Geese should, especially around NY Airports.....!!

Place some wine vinegar in a bowl with a little Dawn Orange dish-washing detergent. It will attract and drown fruit flies and gnats. How do I get rid of fruit flies naturly as I have pets/squirrel in a cage/cat....I am infested?
Take a small jar, put a piece of banana in it, cover the top of the jar with saran wrap and secure with an elastic band, then poke about 5 small holes with a pin. The fruit flies go in but they don't fly out. Once there's a few in there just dump it outside and start again. If there is a lot of fruit flies put a few jars around. Make sure you don't have anything else out that is attracting them, and they should be gone in a week.

I think I'm going to name all flying squirrels 'Jared'.Are flying squirrels just regular squirrels who've lost a lot of weight?
Nope. But it;s more accurate to say that they glide not fly. They can't create any lift like a bird or anything. they just catch air and glide, look at sky divers in gliding suits and it's a good comparision. Are flying squirrels just regular squirrels who've lost a lot of weight?
No, they have a sort of webbing under their arms and between their legs which allow them to catch the wind for gliding short distances.
No they just are squirrels that have an extra flap of skin under their armpits that allows them to glide and appear to fly.

Are flying squirrels legal to own in CT?

According to the Connecticut Government website, it is illegal to keep wild animals as pets. You cannot legally own a native wild flying squirrel.

I couldn't find the exact statute page for prohibited animals. It may be legal to own domestically bred flying squirrels (if they exist), but it's definitely illegal to take one out of the wild.

yes there are flying squirrels: in north america, and various other places around the world. in north america there are the southern and northern flying squirrels. just look up flying squirrel species, and i'm sure you'll find information on all the species.

sugar gliders are not related to flying squirrels, although they are also capable of gliding like flying squirrels. sugar gliders are marsupials. flying squirrels are rodents.
Yes there are, my son rescued one little tiny guy and is raising him. He is about 2 weeks old and absolutely adoreable. This is in Florida about the middle of the state and I didn't know we had them either.

How much do Flying Squirrels cost?

it depends where you purchase one from. they run from about $125 upward, but if you adopt one from a rehabber who is willing to adopt one out, it can simply be for an adoption fee as low as $40. just make sure that if you decide you want one that you get it from a reputable place. generally, not a pet store, as they are often caught from the wild and do not make good pets in that situation. even a hand-tamed baby flyer does not guarantee a 'domestic' acting animal, as they are still wild. How much do Flying Squirrels cost?

Do transitional organisms like flying lizards, flying squirrels, and ocean dwelling mammals prove evolution?

Theories in general cannot be ';proved,'; but they can be supported. A theory is an explanation for phenomena that are known. As more information comes in, the theory may have to be changed. The best theory is the one that gives the simplest natural explanation for the observed facts.

So, they don't prove Evolution in the strict sense. In order to prove something scientifically, you have to be able to replicate the results in multiple trials, and this isn't possible with evolution.

Evolution is a theory supported (not proved) by many observations. It is the simplest non-supernatural explanation for the way things are; therefore it is a good theory. If evidence is found that contradicts the theory as it is now understood, the theory will have to be changed.

I don't think the animals you mention are really in transition, they have just adapted to a certain niche. This supports the theory of evolution, or at least doesn't contradict it.Do transitional organisms like flying lizards, flying squirrels, and ocean dwelling mammals prove evolution?
Well, in reality every species is a transitional organism. So, yes, those are transitional organisms. And those are evidence for evolution.Do transitional organisms like flying lizards, flying squirrels, and ocean dwelling mammals prove evolution?
    Yes.
No. Evolution is proven fact, but neither the presence nor absence of such things bears on the issue. This arises for a number of reasons:

    - Living things don't necessarily die in places where they may become fossilized, or where it is convenient for paleontologists to discover the remains.

    - Genetic information is stored in digital, not analog, form. This means that a one-bit change in the genetic code will have some minimum effect on the descendants, but there is no maximum: a one bit change may activate all or part of an intron, or de-activate all or part of an exon, causing a change which is arbitrarily large. Hence, a supposedly missing ';transitional form'; may simply have never existed.
Yes. But most transition forms that theists say there should be do not and have not existed. There are some transitional forms of animals and humans. It takes millions of years. Each one of us IS a transitional form. We are each a mutation, we are not like our father or mother, we are a combination. It is often claimed that you do not see transitions within a species. This isn't true, it again takes millions of years. We are only this year's model of humanity.

they also have a very bad habit of biting people

I believe you can get one from the organ grinder man on the corner. He seems to make a good living with his.
U CRUEL PERSON!!! I mean, having a pet slug, I guess that's ok, but a racoon? Raccoon's are free animals! They dont' live in houses unless there's no possibility of them surviving in the wild because of a horrible accident or they were captured at birth and wouldn't be able to live in the wilderness. Possoms are also for the wild! you dont keep them no matter how cute they are! I have heard of flying squirrels as pets, but I think they'd be very unhappy. They love to go gliding from tree to tree, not stuck in a cage staring at a living room, or any room. And monkies do not make good pets! They ruin everything, they always have some kind of bugs, and they're very hard to keep calm. Sure they're cute and some ppl keep them as pets, but it's wrong. And no matter what you do for it, when it dies, it'll haunt you because of the horrible time it had with you, you animal hater!
You obviously are on meth....animals cannot do things you want them too...or be what you want them to be....FBI rightoutside your door.
Monkies make BAD pets. They should never be kept as pets.

Sugar gliders or flying squirrels legal in Kentucky?

Neither the sugar glider nor the flying squirrel is specifically banned in Kentucky:

    http://www.api4animals.org/b4a2_exotic_a鈥?/a>

However, as in every state, if an animal is native to that state (as I believe the flying squirrel is to KY), then it would be illegal to capture a wild one and keep it captive. You would need to purchase your pet from a legitimate USDA licensed breeder.
Flying squirrels are native to Kentucky. if you can catch one and keep it alive then it must be legal. Sugar Gliders are not squirrels. they are not native to the United States. They are regulated by USFDA and State statute so look them up.

    Nope, sorry?

I just found out you can have flying squirrels as pets, does anyone know where i can get one?

I've seen ads for Australian Sugar Gliders. They're not really flying squirrels, but they look remarkably similar.

I kept two Southern Flying Squirrels for about a month, on a big screened-in porch at our house in Alabama. They had taken up residence in the attic, and we caught them and relocated them to the porch. We got them a hamster cage, with a little plastic ';hamster house'; in it. We put a sock inside the house, and we would let them out at night to fly around the screened-in porch. We left them various nuts to eat. At the crack of dawn, they would become more active, making their last ';flying runs'; of the day, and then they'd go into the hamster house on their own and put the sock in front of the door and go to sleep.

They're fascinating animals and I enjoyed watching them, but they do tend to relieve themselves everywhere. I think it would be cruel to keep them penned up in a small area; they need to be able to glide to be happy. But the mess is a real problem, so long-term I don't think they're good to keep as pets, unless you can construct some sort of fancy aviary pen for them. Also, they are nocturnal, so you have to stay up late or get up early in order to enjoy them. After a month, we gave ours their freedom. (They probably missed the fancy nuts, though!)I just found out you can have flying squirrels as pets, does anyone know where i can get one?
First double check with your state laws regarding exotic animals, as flying squirrels are technically wild animals. There are many breeders in Texas that sell and ship them.I just found out you can have flying squirrels as pets, does anyone know where i can get one?

Why do people assume that sugar gliders and flying squirrels are the same thing?

    Sugar Gliders = Marsupial

Flying Squirrels = RodentWhy do people assume that sugar gliders and flying squirrels are the same thing?
If I name my flying squirrel Sugar Glider, they are the same thing. Anyway ... thank you for the info. Why do people assume that sugar gliders and flying squirrels are the same thing?
Ignorance and lack of information. Being that they look similar can throw the ignorant off. But they are completely different animals.
My glider kids have been called all kinds of things. Most people just can't make the relation between them and marsupials - when I'm showing them to someone I have to use a flying squirrel as an example to what they can do with the gliding membrane. They never remember anyways, always say ';you know, those uh... uh, flying uh... bat monkey things!';...
Because many people are ignorant and ambivalant about certain subjects. This is not reflective of their overall intelligence but your question is.

For instance, why would a zoologist get mad at somebody calling a capuchin or ostrich an african mammal. They would simply acknowledge most people don't care if they know the answer or not.
Because people don't know what they really are.

I love sugar gliders. They are so soft. Until they pee on my shoulder.

Are southern flying squirrels legal as pets in Virginia?

I ask because i have 3 baby orphans that i am getting very attached to!!Are southern flying squirrels legal as pets in Virginia?
The previous answer was way too general. That is the stance of most states about most squirrels, but flying squirrels seem to be an exception. Southern flying squirrels are legal to keep as pets in many states (Texas, Mass., Idaho, Florida, Wisconsin), but according to this board, Virginia isn't one of them. :( I used to have one as a pet when I lived in a state where it was legal, so I understand your attachment!!!Are southern flying squirrels legal as pets in Virginia?
    NOPE!

To keep squirrels as pets in the US, you need an armload of certifications, permits, and training. Even then, they would not be considered pets and you would still have to relese them when they got old enough. Call your vet or animal control officer and ask for the nearest wildlife rehabilitator. They will treat the squirrels very well and do everything necessary to release them back into the wild. Many will even let you participate in the release if you want.

  • What is the best way to get rid of flying squirrels in you attic?

Is that the same as ';bats in your belfry?'; Seriously, find out how they are getting in there, find out what they like to eat (squirrel chow perhaps), and sprinkle it near their entrance. Once you're sure they're all out, seal the hole. But for goodness sake, whatever you do, be humane! They're just doing what we do...trying to survive. So please, don't do anything to harm them. If you seek a professional person to get the job done, insist on humane (non-lethal) methods. What is the best way to get rid of flying squirrels in you attic?
Have someone stand outside your house, and someone go in the attic. The person in the attic bangs on a pot, scaring the squirrels out their holes. The person or persons on the outside watch where the squirrels exit. Then, cover the holes. Some people nail tin can lids over the holes, making it impossible for the squirrels to chew through to get back in. Some people hook up a hose to their car exhaust and into a hole in their attic, driving the squirrels out their holes. Works for bats too. %26lt;*)))%26gt;%26lt;What is the best way to get rid of flying squirrels in you attic?
