Are flying squirrels just regular squirrels who lost a lot of weight?

haha, no. they're a different species of squirrels. they have flaps of skin that connect their front and back legs. they don't really fly, they more jump and then glide from branch to branch. Are flying squirrels just regular squirrels who lost a lot of weight?
no they are small squirrels,

i live in east texas %26amp; call them sugar gliders

they are about half the size ( or less ) of regular cat squirrels

they have webb between arms %26amp; legs but really just ';hop'; %26amp; ';flop'; from tree to tree

i see lots of them in the fall/ winter

they like anything stale breaad, crackers, cereal, cheerios, even some bird seed now %26amp; again/

Have fun !!!!Are flying squirrels just regular squirrels who lost a lot of weight?
YES
Flying squirrels are squirrels that have skin going from their arms to their legs like wings. They use these to glide from tree to tree.
and developed a need for speed
uhh... no.. lol good try tho...
No, they have extra skin between legs on sides.
Flying squirrels are adapted to glide through the air, by having a flap of skin which is tucked away except when traveling through the trees, and landing on unsuspecting Muffinmen.

Seriously, we have Flying Squirrels in Missouri. I've lived here 26 years but just found out about them several years ago. Flying Squirrels are nocturnal.

Muffinman, are you nocturnal?
some of 'em are on a windy day
Thanks for thought to ponder for the evening!! LOL
The extra skin, and the aerodynamics dont lie.
No ,they are not the same. Flying squirrels have a web of skin at their front legs to the body to glide to different trees or to escape danger.
They're Super Squirrels
No... when they jump and spread their from and back legs they flatten out and almost look like flat frisbee

click below to see a photo of one.
Completely different type of squirrel. They have extra skin between both sides of their body. Between each of their feet. The get up high and glide across a clearing.
When and doubt, look it up on Wikipedia!

';The term ';flying'; is somewhat misleading, since flying squirrels are actually gliders incapable of true flight. Gliding is achieved by this animal by launching off the tops of trees and extending flaps of skin stretched from arms to legs: once they have launched themselves into the air they are highly maneuverable while in flight. Steering is accomplished by adjusting tautness of the patagium, largely controlled by a small cartilaginous wrist bone. The tail acts as a stabilizer in flight, much like the tail of a kite, and as an adjunct airfoil when ';braking'; prior to landing on a tree trunk.';
Random question but they have furry wings to match their tail
i think they have webbed paws
No
Of course. They spread the loose skin and glide on it.

Rose P.
their bodies are flat
they are light weight but they also have a fold of skin under the arms that acts as a cape which allows them to glide a short distance
Nope. I think they're hollow boned, like birds. Also, they have those flaps of skin that enable them to fly. By the way, I love your murdoc avie!! ^_^
I think you mean sqirls.,.
I'm not sure but i saw one pass by my window!
I saw something on utube how someone had a slingshot rigged on their porch, the squirrels would get in it and get shot a considerable distance. If I didnt know how evil they could be, I'd have been upset by it.
No. They have different bodies. Look it up on the internet.
i just had to say that i cracked up at the question
NO they are different. These squirrels dont fly they glide. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h鈥?/a>
